I have considered getting the Bluechart Vision card for my Garmin and was wondering if anyone out there has it. I'm not so interested in the satellite imagery, aerial photography, etc., more so I am wondering how good the auto-plotting feature is. My understanding is you enter characteristics (length, height, draft, etc.) of your boat, enter a point A and a point B, and it does the routing for you.

Thanks,

Bob

I was just reading about that earlier tonight and trying to figure out if it's necessary as opposed to the base maps. I guess the base maps don't have the depth and that is only added with the G2 card. I was shocked at the price. Garmin's price for the Seattle/San Juans area was $321 and I saw it listed on eBay for $200. I thought it would be less than that! So I need a $500 unit with a couple of G2's at $200 a shot.

From what I read that is the only way to get marine routing. It sounds like a great feature and with fuel prices where they are it will probably pay for itself over time with a shorter route and keeping the props in deep water.

Hmmm my 3205 came with the maps built in and I can see all depths for my area, I thought the G2 card only added the areal photography, I'd love it if my 3205 could plot me a course from point a to point b probably would save me gas instead of driving around what I think is the best course.

Bob,

I would not count on the auto-guidance saving you any fuel, but what the heck maybe it will. You do not have any information in your profile. So I assume you are located along a coastal area. The vision card/auto-guidance will not work for inland waterways. I have a Garmin 430 (inland version) with the g2 vision card. I bought it back in November. I have not been down to the coasat with it. However, g2 vision card will allow you to select from destinations (within about 50 miles I think) in the database and then plot the course as a highway to your destination. I do not believe you can punch in your own waypoints and use those with the auto-guidance feature.

I have the G2 card for my 5208 and it is great...I have south florida to the Keys and the Bahamas...The auto routing is cool but you need to double check everything to make sure you entered the data correct. Also if there has been any shifting on the bottom, it wouldn't know it.

Barry,

Will the auto-guidance work when punching in your own waypoints or do you have to select from the pre-programmed database?

Does the autoguidence keep you between the channel markers?

I think you are looking at a different card. The G2 VISION card has more features than the G2 card.

I am going to get the Vision card very soon. BTW, Jim has a great price on these cards.

I searched for the word Auto in my manual and it says nothing about Auto-Guidance

Figures looks right your correct, 3205 goes G2 and not the G2 vision so I'm SOL! That totally sucks the big doo daaa.. Glad I didn't pay much for it.

that will take alot of boat bucks and right now all boat bucks go to the gas tank.

Wonder what I can get for a bairly used 3205 :)

$600 to $1,100, unless they've looked at the new prices here! :) $950 is a great price for a new unit. I'm looking for a GPS Unit, but I'm torn on whether I need G2 Vision capability or not. Probably not!

I bought the 5208 unit last year preloaded with the G2 maps. Opted against spending another $250 for the vision card. Cool graphics, but not enough to make me part with $250+.

Jim, can you give any opinion on the Vision card? This is on my list of things to get this spring. Is it worth it? Most of my trips are in unfamiliar waters.

It is not going to help you get through unfamiliar waters any better than the pre-loaded charts. It does open up a whole lot of nice features on the unit which in my opinion makes it worth the money. My favorite window to use while cruising is the Mariners Eye. The Mariners Eye works without the card but with the card it actually colors the water red, yellow and blue so you can see where it is safe to go at a glance. The auto-routing feature is pretty damn cool too. I don't normally use the satellite photos on land as they slow the unit down a bit, but that is another feature you get with Vision. The 3D Fish Eye view is pretty neat also.

So it sounds like you give it a  and I need to dump my barely used 3205 for something that will let me do the G2 Vision stuff and a bonus would be it uses regular memory sticks and not the garmin proprietary ones.

So what is comparable to the 3205 in size and features but allows for the G2 Vision cards?
