We are considering a mid-week trip to the Bay to see the May 26th, Blue Angles air show. I was curious to know if anyone plans on viewing the event from their boats? Does anyone have any insight into good areas to drop anchor for the day? It sounds like a great excuse to get out on the water with the kids.

Thanks
Joe

jDennis,

Thanks for the info, let me know if you're going to make it down - we could raft up between the bridges and test out my new cup holders:grin:. (it looks like that's where the youtube videos were shot from. I have a few small conflicts to work out, but we're going to try and make it.

Joe

I'll be there. Just added May 25th to the vacation schedule at work.

Dennis, where will you be launching your boat from? If you want to make a 19 mile run down you could launch from our marina. If you'de like to launch from above the Naval Academy on the Severn, then I'd suggest Smith's Marina in Crownsville. That is a very nice 5 or so mile run down the Severn with a nice secluded place to park your rig.

Hope to see you guys there!

We will be there Joe. We'll be coming down from Skipjack and then we're going to take the rest of the week off. I haven't scoped out anchorage yet.

See you there!

Yeah, I bet we could very easily find a few "drinks of choice" that would fit in there very nicely, Joe!

Tim, "Skipjack's"... are you no longer in the S.E.?

Ski- We'd most likely put in at Elk Neck, but what marina are you in? Thanks for the tip on Smith's, too!

It's going to be tough for us - I double checked schedules and right now I'd have to lean towards us not being able to go. I'm bummed - I was getting excited! :smt009

Peter - I'm at Bill's Boats next to the Dock of the Bay restaurant. Its about 26 miles closer to the Severn than Elk Neck. Its right near the Craighill Channel Lower Range Light. Google can find that for ya.

That looks like a nice area to be at. I've been by that area, but was always on a mission to get to Baltimore -
I need to learn to stop and smell the roses more.

Interesting reading on Craighill!:smt001

I've been down there on the water for the show. Tons of boats but I didn't care because I was on a BIG boat rented by a vendor. If you don't want to deal with the boat traffic consider going down the day before because that's when they do the entire routine as practice. They did it last year and it was a good time and less traffic.

I am in, I plan on keeping the kid out of school for this one. Should be very cool. If anybody has been there before.....what time should you arrive to beat the heavy traffic???

I'm not sure what time is best, but it sounded like being on the river prior to 10:30am would be important (i believe this time came from thread #2 - Dennis) as they may limit or restrict traffic on the river after that. This will be our first attempt at attending this event, so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can as well. Sounds like it should be amazing (weather permitting).

Well it looks like we're a go for the 26th. We'll be pushing off at approx. 8:45am from Fairlee Creek. It's looking like a day trip for us, but that could change...(work dependent)

Is the 25th practice and the 26th the show? If so, is the 25th a better day to go? I am trying to figure out what day to go. Thanks.

Yes, as I understand it, the 25th is practice, and the 26th is the show itself (I could certainly be overruled, but that what I understand it to be). Having never attended this event, I'll turn your "which day is better" question to those that can comment from experience. DaleM did responded earlier in the string (see post) and it sounds like he's saying the practice may be less crowded (less boat traffic), but I don't know if there's a difference in the actual show.

My calendar restrictions have made my decision for me, so I'll be there on the 26th (weather permitting) Hope to see you there.

OK, I have checked the Blues official schedule and it states there will be a show on the 26th and a flyover on the 28th. SO, based on this, I assume there will be a practice day on the 25th but we all know what happens when one assumes. So, if anyone out there has any better information than this please post it. As it stands right now I plan to be there on the 26th, practice or show date, whichever happens.

After searching for a bit I was able to find some information online about the show there in 06 and it would appear that the USCG either closed or significantly reduced river traffic. Does anyone have any specific information on what the crowd (boat) control plans might be for the 26th or 28th?

Hope to see some of you there.

I was supposed to go out of Annapolis on a vender sponsored event and that was on the 25th (Tuesday) which I think is the actual event.

We are planning on attending the show on the 26th just trying to figure out a good spot. It would be nice to get a raftup going. By all accounts this seems to be a very memorable event.

The end of May in Annapolis is going to be an exciting week. Graduation ceremonies at the Naval Academy is always cause for celebration and a big event. One of the more exciting aspects of the graduation ceremonies is the spectacular demonstration put on by the Navy's famous Blue Angels precision flying squadron. The Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration in 1946. They are always an amazing and entertaining site, and in the Annapolis area, draw a large number of boaters to view the event from the water. With these typical crowded conditions in a small harbor, care and common sense are the watchwords of the day. In addition, the Coast Guard and Captain of The Port have placed some restrictions on the local waters. Below are excerpts from the Local Notice To Mariners,

MD-CHESAPEAKE BAY-SEVERN RIVER & COLLEGE CREEK - Regulated area

The U. S. Naval Academy will host their annual Blue Angels Air Show at Annapolis, Maryland at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. The high-speed aerial demonstration of low-flying, fixed-wing aircraft operating above the Severn River (between the
Severn River Bridge and Greenbury Point) also includes a circle and arrival at 11 a.m. and a practice demonstration at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. As described in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Section 100.501, a regulated area will be
enforced both days, from 10:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 25, 2010, and from 1:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. on May 26, 2010. This area applies to all waters of the Severn River, from shoreline to shoreline, bounded to the northwest by a line drawn from the south
shoreline at 39°00'38.9" N, 076°31'05.2" W, thence to the north shoreline at 39°00'54.7" N, 076°30'44.8" W, this line is approximately 1300 yards northwest of the Severn River (US-50/301) Bridge. The regulated area is bounded to the southeast by
a line drawn from the Naval Academy Light at 38°58'39.5" N, 076°28'49" W, thence southeast to a point 700 yards east of Chinks Point, at 38°58'1.9" N, 076°28'1.7" W, thence northeast to Greenbury Point at 38°58'29" N, 076°27'16" W. The effect will
be to restrict vessel traffic on the Severn River and College Creek. The Coast Guard Patrol Commander may forbid and control the movement of all vessels in the regulated area. When hailed or signaled by an official patrol vessel, a vessel in the area shall
immediately comply with the directions given. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the area, citation for failure to comply, or both. Spectators may contact the Patrol Commander to request permission to operate within the regulated area, but
shall at all times remain outside the designated show box; if permission is granted, spectators must proceed at a safe speed and without loitering. Mariners are urged to schedule their transits on these waterways beyond the enforcement times on both days.
A marked temporary access channel (8 red buoys and 7 green buoys) will be established near Horn Point, to allow vessels to transit into and out of Spa Creek during the event; vessels operating in this area will do so at their own discretion. At no time will
spectators be permitted to obstruct the access channel. Mariners should expect the presence of orange floating markers, and U.S. Coast Guard and Navy Yard Patrol craft, anchored in the Severn River during May 25-26, 2010, used to assist in marking
the southern boundary of the air show flight box. A Navy Yard Patrol craft will be anchored in the Severn River during May 24-26, 2010 to assist in marking the centerline of the air show flight box. The Coast Guard may be assisted in the patrol and
enforcement of this area by federal, State and local agencies. For any comments or questions, contact Coast Guard Sector Baltimore Waterways Management Division, at (410) 576-2674, (410) 576-2693 or Ronald.L.Houck@uscg.mil, or the Officer-of the-
Day at Coast Guard Station Annapolis, at (410) 267-8108, during the events. Charts 12282, 12283.

the Port Baltimore and proceed at the minimum speed necessary to maintain a safe course while within the zone. The U.S. Coast Guard may be assisted in the patrol and enforcement of the zone by Federal, State, and local agencies. Chart :12283.

Have a great time but be safe. The Waterway Crew will be out on the water enjoying the festivities.[/FONT]

Is this any different from the other years? I plan on being there on Tuesday May 25th for my first time, where should I anchor or do you think I have a chance to get a mooring in downtown? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
