blowing fuses

I can't figure out why I keep blowing fuses for my buldge pump. There is i fuse at the back by the battery and one under the dash board(helm) the one that keeps on blowing is the one under the helm. Just wondering if the there is a ground that goes from the pump right to the battery or if there is a ground from the pump to the enginge block. My boat is a 2002 185 I/O 3.4 v6 merc.

Please put your boat information in your signature (year, model, motor, etc). Sorry I can't help with your question but several people tend to stay away from questions without the basic information in your signature. You may find you get more results by doing so.

Check your wiring and especially your ground. If that checks out OK, you may have a frozen impeller.

I agree with Doug’s recommendation.

You should be able to pull out the bilge pump and connect the two wires to something with 12 volts and see if it’s working.

Sometimes the internal part that pumps the water, called the impeller, can get something wedged inside it and cause it to jam. Sometimes the motors burn out.

It’s a good idea to have at least two bilge pumps on separate electrical circuits and connected to different batteries if you have a at least two batteries.

Oh, and check them.

Had my bilge pump replaced a month ago. Rusted solid. Chances are the "bearing" is rusted solid so when you engage the pump, the fuse blows. Check the pump. Afterward, make sure that the fuse from the battery is good... Had mine done at MM and they didn't check that. Good thing I was thinking or the auto-bilge would not have worked...

Had a similiar problem with my bilge blower. When I installed a second fuse and it promptly blew, I went over and tried to spin it. Very hard. Your pump is probably getting to the same point...
