This is what i did to loosen mine. I think i used the manual crank handle from my hydraulic pump as I didn't want to chip off one of the notches.I took a long handled screwdriver and placed against the notches and tapped a few times. Once it started to move, it was very easy to unscrew.

Before I cut a larger access hole I think i am going to get a length of dowel or 3/4" square stock and try tapping the notches of the ring with it. I may just be able to get it in there.
I feel your pain!By the way just checked my clearance and its about 7 inches to remove the senders. I'm able to get mine out very easily once I get it unscrewed. So though yours have a bit less clearance it may not be too bad.
Edit: My empty reading went away on its own so it either cleared itself or we were truly very empty as we are down one kid who is at camp. However I now have to go tackle a clog in the master head. I just can't win!
