Black water sender or indicator

I took a long handled screwdriver and placed against the notches and tapped a few times. Once it started to move, it was very easy to unscrew.

This is what i did to loosen mine. I think i used the manual crank handle from my hydraulic pump as I didn't want to chip off one of the notches.

Thanks @Irie308, and thanks all for the ideas!
Before I cut a larger access hole I think i am going to get a length of dowel or 3/4" square stock and try tapping the notches of the ring with it. I may just be able to get it in there.

You have the gist of it. I said screwdriver, but now that I think about it, I had scrap piece of dowel that I used as well. You don’t have to move it very much at all to turn it by hand.

Ugh, This season i was celebrating that i finally got my sensors working. Now I've been on the hook since suday and the tank sensor is still reading empty. So that sensors is stuck. Going to pump out today and do a couple flushes to see if it frees up otherwise I'll be cracking it open same as you. Personally I think its a dumb design. Why have floats that can be bound up by solids in a waste tank?????

This is solely my personal experience, but I have never had a float hang up after I introduced NoFlex for a period of time. We bought a 44DB, only the empty float worked. Pulled and cleaned, started using NoFlex, never a hang up in 4 years. Bought the 420DA, no floats worked. It took 6 months of using NoFlex very liberally, and all floats now work. During the "no-work" time, I installed a Wema sending unit and gauge in the holding tank and mounted the gauge in my electrical panel in the salon thinking that the OEM senders/floats were toast. Low and behold, NoFlex cleaned it all up and within 8 months, all were functional. Now I have the Wema system and OEM that both work. I will also say that since I started using "Carter's recipe," I use it far more liberally than the instructions call for. For what it cost and no issues, it is worth it in my opinion.

I too use Noflex religously and am a big fan. When we first got the boat 4 years ago the tank odor was always there. After a year of noflex we have zero odor. My guess is that the float has some tissue hung up on it that is holding it down. My guess is that certain things in the tank floats and then settles as you are pumping out. Would love to swap out the floats for some kind of ultrasonic unit.

I've been using No-Flex and switched to Carters recipe this year. (Thanks @Tripsdad !!!) Never had an issue.
I also use it liberally!
Im hoping its just hung up on some tissue...
Went last night and did not have luck. Thinking about it, I have to remove the vent hose. one of the DUH moments.

By the way just checked my clearance and its about 7 inches to remove the senders. I'm able to get mine out very easily once I get it unscrewed. So though yours have a bit less clearance it may not be too bad.

Edit: My empty reading went away on its own so it either cleared itself or we were truly very empty as we are down one kid who is at camp. However I now have to go tackle a clog in the master head. I just can't win!

I feel your pain!

Been using the NoFlex for 4 months now. I noticed for the first time since I bought the boat in March the holding tank light at the head is showing "1/2" and so is the one on the breaker panel. I assume it's because it's cleaner in the holding tank now, so the sensor is working.

After 11 months, countless pump outs and consistent use of no flex/Carter's poopy powder...

It took 4 hours in the ocean with half a tank of black water to unstick the sender.

I guess patience does pay.
