Big Decision Made

Would you mind sharing some of your plans?

Do you intend to trade your boat for a larger one?

Are you still hand building a smaller wood boat or was that a joke?

I would ease into the living on the boat in the winter in the NE.

I will this winter...I am going to sleep on my deck in a sleeping bag from December 1 to March 1....That would be a joke for those that still think from April fools day that the boat is sold...

There is a family that lives at that marina aboard a Gulfstar 49 - I know she's an eye doctor and they have 2 teenage kids If I remember right one of them goes to Boston Latin - There was a cool write up about their experience in one of the boating mags a while back

We kept the boat in for the first time this winter and loved it - went down just about every weekend - got my eye on a larger boat too so we can spend more time there but haven't set a "date" yet - hope to soon

I don't know, I've hung at marinas during Jan and Feb is it's like hanging out in Siberia.

Honestly - everywhere sucks here in the winter, on a boat or not - but the hotels in Newport are routinely full of tourists anyway - there is a lot to do - there is an indoor pool (constitution marina encloses theirs too) we enjoy ourselves and it is great not having to deal with a lot of other "marina crowd"

Boating in winter in Boston does not seem appealing to me. Florida, yes

Will the marina pump out your holding tank in the middle of winter?
Will the marina shovel the docks?
Will the marina keep their bathrooms/showers open?
Is cable/internet available in the winter?
Will the restaurants remain open?
What about garbage removal?

Yes to all those question.....The marina is 50% full in the winter with liveaboards......It is only real tough weatherwize for less than a dozen days/nights......My parents are local and I have enough Marriott (100 yards from marina) points to stay the year...We can always make excuses!!!! And of course you would be cold, you are a monkey

100% yes at my marina too - My marina is full every winter

Would you winter in the NE or would you cruise somewhere South? If you plan to stay in the NE, the monster big worry has to be getting on and off the boat in adverse conditions, ice on the boat, dock, anywhere you want to grab, etc.

As far as moving up in size that would probably depend more on the availability of deck hands. Docking your 36DB has to be about impossible with no deck hands.

yes i would winter in boston...i will still be working.......as far as docking.....yes dock 80% of the time by myself.......would never get a boat that i couldn't.......

Ok, I'll be the first to admit it... I'm jealous... there.

Good luck... very doable to all those warm weather thin blooded folks that think this is somehow out of the norm for NE boaters... We're a hardy bunch.

I liken it to my SCUBA diving... whenever I tell someone I dive year round in NE they look at my like I'm nuts... They don't know what they are missing.

I lived on my 380 for 5 months 2 winters ago in hendersonville tn, I was going through a divorce and moved aboard in sept. The marina emptied out in oct and it was along cold winter after that. I respect your ambition and wish you luck, dont be afraid to rely on brown liquor to help you through the winter!!

No woman is going to want you if your package freezes and falls off in the water as you're going to the dumpster to throw out chicken bones from dinner.
