Hi. I am a newbie to boating, just bought (new to me) a 2001 SR 225 W/E and cannot wait to get started! Wondering which would be the best route from Somers Point (Marine Max) to Little Egg Bay...the ICW or the ocean? Just curious to hear what peeps from this area have to say and starting to plan cause it cannot get here fast enough!
Thanks

We also boat our of Somers Point. The best route for me would be the ocean. On a 225, you would have to wait for a day with calm winds out of the northwest and you would have a great ride up. The ICW would work, but it would take hours through many no wake zones and bridges.
Enjoy your new 225 and see you 'around the neighborhood'.

I have gone both inside and out... If your new to boating, I would recommend going outside... We went from MM in Sumerspoint to TR with gail force winds inside all the way. We broke things on our 300. But the water was high, which was good... There was 15' waves coming under bridge from the inlet... We were young and stupid... The problem with inside, especially early in the season is if you hit the flats just north of AC at low tide... I have run aground inside in the channel on plane between AC and Little Egg in April more than once... Inside is between MM and AC is straight forward if you follow the charts... If I remember correctly there was just one bridge we had to have raised... Needless to say, going outside is very easy if the weather is good, even for a boat your size... The only thing tricky, would be getting in the Little Egg Inlet... Unlike my friends, I don't like that inlet and actually prefer the Barnegat Inlet... I you go outside I would try to avoid going in or out an inlet with the wind against the tide... It gets snotty for a small boat...

Thanks for your opinions!! In fact I am such a newbie that I didn't even take the boaters course yet. I do that in 2 weeks yay! So I'm sure i will be coming here alot to ask questions.

What boaters course? you mean the one to get your boaters license?

If you need expert advice on running aground, Rod is the guy to ask. (rknecht) He has bottomed out in more places than I've been to!

You would need a perfect day with perfect conditions to go on the ocean with your boat.

Then of course, there's always the land route (via trailer) but that's not near as much fun.

Good Luck!

Hey, I thought you were banned.

I've been reinstated after parole. But I lost my silver sponsor and still don't have email privileges.

I just got back from a weekend on the boat. Sawweeettt. I'm looking at april to bring her up north. I will need all the local knowledge I can get to plan the trip. Thanks Rod.

Mike, My running aground has been limited to the Jersey Shore... I have a friends that have made the trip up and down the cost and tell me that the NC inlets are bad in the spring, and you need to update your charts with the latest notice to mariners... A friend of mine hit bottom with his Blue Water that draws only 2' in NC inlet after a storm. I am sure there are folks on this site that can assist you every step of the way, and probably take you out to dinner... We need to start a new "Help the Turtle make it home" thread.... Something for everyone to look forward to in April...

When are you coming north??? I can tell your where you can hit ground from Jacksonville to the Manesquan inlet....

I don't mean to highjack the thread, but.....
I sent you a pm and did not get a response. I would like your opinion on the MarineMax dealership in Somers Point. I am doing business with them this weekend and would appreciate your (or anyone's) comments. I am buying a used Sea Ray. So far they have been great to work with, we are scheduled to complete our deal this weekend. Although another snowstorm is predicted.:smt013
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, they are my service dealer. I would recommend them; they've always helped me out (eg warranty coverage) but I didn't buy my boat there.

Steve
Not sure if you PMd me or Gerry, but I didn't get a PM. I have had no dealings with MM in Somers Point. Sorry.

Thanks for the replies,:smt038
I thought we sere escaping this latest storm in our area, but we got hit with about 4-6 inches last night and it is still coming down this morning.:smt013
I am still holding out hope to trailer my skis down to Somers Point MM and complete the deal for the 215 Sea Ray tomorrow but it isn't looking good.
Steve

Steve,

No worries, even if you can't make it this weekend you've got plenty of time. The boat is not going anywhere in this weather and in this economy.

Good luck and see you on the bay.
Alex.

If you are that new, I recommend you have an experienced boater friend come along for the ride. Their is no room for ego when keeping boating safe. You'll learn a lot and get there safe. It's also more fun with a buddy along.

Oh hell no am I going by myself! Will def have an experienced boater coming with. I will not be comfortable taking boat out by myself for quite awhile. Thanks to everyone who answered. I have learned alot from reading these forums and have actually made a binder of printed advice that I got from here that I am reading.
