Need to replace my oooooooooold speakers(61/2 Round). Any suggestions? JC

Polk MOMO's are great, and so are the MB Quart Premium component speakers. The latter can be mounted concentricly (together) to fit in a standard, one-hole mount.

Be sure to check on your current speakers' resistance in ohms and match that exactly with the replacement set. Also, if you go with premium speakers, make sure that you either have enough power to drive them now, or you install an amp that will do it.

The high end speakers really put out, but they have to have the power to just break even with your old ones.

Additionally, I just put the premium MB Quarts in my truck, and I was able to snag them at 1/2 retail by ordering on line and working the system just right. I don't remember the details right now, but it had something to do with clicking a tiny link on the web page and listing competing prices.

Guys, Thanks a bunch for the help!!!!! I currently have a clarion mx3 (I think?) with clarion 160/2 channel amp? Does that sound right? The current speakers are clarion 100w? and are old and blown by previous owners grand kids. Thus the need for NEW speakers. I really want some high Quality speakers. We are not really big radio guys but do like to listen at nite to some old 60/70's music. Any more ideas welcomed! :smt038 JC

I replaced Clarion speakers last year and did not seem to make much difference. So this year replaced the power amp increasing it from 160 watt to 1,000 watt, and that made a huge difference. It seems that maybe I did not need to replace the speakers as much as upgrade the power source.

Bill, Thanks for those ideas. The 160/2 channell i assume came with my boat? I donot need it to sound like the phil orchestra but i would like good quality music. I think i will try good speakers first then upgrade amp if needed. JC

UPDATE: Well having studied this thing to death I went with MB QUART speakers. Taking them to the boat in 2wks and will update then on how they sound. Thanks everyone for your help! :smt038 JC

my buddy with a 370DA installed a powered tube subwoofer under the rear-facing seat in the cockpit and it made a HUGE difference in the sound. i have always found it difficult to get good bass response out of anything smaller than a 6 by 9 speaker, even in an automobile. powered subwoofers are a relatively inexpensive and excellent way to pump up the volume without rattling your cones.

I added a powered tube type sub to my slightly smaller sea ray and the difference was huge!

Good Choice on the MB Quarts. I just replaced my speakers with the MB Quart Q series and they sound AMAZING. Last year's model can be had for over half off right now.

I'm a big fan of Polk speakers...

I just put in 2 sets of Polk DB651's - very very happy. Circuit City has a 'buy one get second 50% off' deal - $150 for all 4. Now I just need to find a decent head unit.

JC- If you really want to love your purchase definitely get and amp before you light them up. Trust me the one thing good speakers scream for is power. You'll think you spent money on nothing without throwing those MB's some juice. Best of luck

Todd, I have a Clarion 160/2 amp. I dont want it to sound like ( i better be nice) too loud. Will the Clarion push it enough to sound reasonable to this ole country boy. :smt017 JC

I'm like you, I don't need to have my ears bleeding, but with enough Power you will take advantage of the high quality MB speakers. They love juice, so regardless of the volume they'll sound good. The big thing though is if you starve them for power is when they'll blow :smt009
Do you only have 2 speakers or 4? Did you get the NKA's or NKD's. Whatever you have 2 or 4, throw 70W @ the NKA's or 100-125W @ the NKD's.
I'm not sure what model Clarion Amp you have but it sounds like it should be able to power 2 speakers 80W per speaker. If you have 4 speakers, you need another AMP like the one you have.

Todd, I bought the nkd116's. The big boys. $156.00 for a pair. I have 4 cockpit speakers + subwoofer. I think i will hook them up and see what i think(more importantly what the Admiral thinks) and go from there. Thanks Guys for the help. JC
