My 56 sedan bridge came with a 60lb stainless anchor. Not sure if it was original. We anchor almost every weekend and many times we have boats rafted off of us. After a recent trip to Chicago, I had trouble getting it to bite and had no idea why. When I investigated further, I found that it was actually torsionally twisted (pic attached). No idea how it happened as we didn't need to yank it ever. I wound up with an 88b Lewmar galvanized Delta from Defender Marine (the only company I could find to get it delivered before our trip to MI on 7/20). I chose the galvanized considering I bent a stainless one and the stainless was FIVE times more $$ ($650 vs. $3,200). Won't be as pretty on the bow but it will stick in the bottom just fine... Installing the new one this weekend and I will update.

That's impressive when you bend a stainless anchor! I hope you like your Delta! Enjoy your trip! Where are you heading? I'm a former Cheesehead and know those waters well.

I have that same Delta anchor on my boat. I replaced a Danforth of similar size with the Delta and I find the Delta sets a lot faster.

I don't know if a machine shop could straighten that out, but even if it could it would likely not be as strong as it was originally.

Is it possible someone hit the anchor while in your slip? I can't see that bending under normal conditions. Enjoy your trip!

Stainless steel looks good and resists rust, but isn't strong. Lacks carbon and isn't much stronger than a low grade hardware store #2 bolt.

Did you get it stuck and have to pull over to dislodge. Had a similar bend/twist on my galvanized anchor when stuck hard. Had to get a new galvanized. Since then, I carry bolt cutters in case I get stuck and can't get it loose. Better to cut some chain than have to lose 200 feet

Question, if you did have it straightened out isn't the anchor now weaker than it was when it was new?

Sorry to delay getting back to everyone. I have not tried to get it fixed yet but will let the group know what I find out. I assume it will not be as strong and would use it only as a back-up. The new 88b Delta is great. We went to Manistee and stayed at the Municipal marina there. Rented a car and went North to the Platt River tubing and had a blast. White Lake was great at Ellenwood Landing. The new Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland is really great and they are getting new electrical on the face dock to include 50Amp. I have never been anywhere that did not have two 50s and had to buy a $480 adaptor (two 30s to 50) when I got there. But now I have one so it's all good.

I'll post pics on a separate post.

Just FYI - one night when we were in our slip (we dock stern in), we felt this huge bump and it turned out that someone was trying to dock their boat and instead, hit ours!!

Thankfully they didn't do much damage but on our previous boat we did something similar and bent our anchor. The guy at West Marine told me that they lose about 30% of their holding power when they're bent.

From what I've heard, metal becomes weaker the more you work it so I'm not sure that your stainless steel anchor will ever be the same but it's worth asking a machine shop if they can do anything with it. It's too expensive to just use it as a decoration!

Thanks for the heads-up, Sandy. That bump in the night must have been scary. Glad nothing serious happened. I will wait until winter to deal with the stainless anchor. For now, it's sitting on the dock...

Sorry for your bent anchor, I have worked with SS for 40 years and if you can find someone to bend it without heating it, you should be good as new other than some scratches. Good Luck:

Jim
