I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the beam vac to turn on. I was under the impression you just plug it in and it comes on automatically. I inspected the canister today and it looks brand new, has no dirt in the bag etc. I flipped on all the breakers, plugged in the hose and nada... please help

The hose connection is known to be a bit fussy. Try cleaning the metal band around the hose and the two nobules in theconnector plate with some isopropyl alcohol and reconnect them. Jiggle the hose in the connector. Some people have bypassed the connector and installed a simple on/off toggle switch next to the connector plate.

Thanks gerryb, you are giving me all the answers tonight. I am completely new to this and as soon as I fix one thing something else "surprises" me. I remember the first day I jumped onboard this boat and thought to myself "with a little bit of elbow grease I'll bring her right back to life"... then I bought her and when i got back onboard i though "what the hell have I done to myself"... and now I feel like I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Thanks again for all of your help, this forum is such a great asset.

Greg, happy to help. We've all been there... trust me...

Search the boards, read, and Ask away...this board has helped me more times than I can count over the past ten years...

Mine does not have its own breaker as it is wired from the stb GFCI receptacle. Do you know that you have 120 volts to the vac unit? I would start there before going any further.

Not sure if it is common with other SD models but my vac system fires up momentarily when I activate the stbd system on the AC panel.
I did have trouble this season when I plugged the hose into the receptacle..no power up. I took the receptacle apart..jiggled the wires and was good to go.
No problems since.

I have had to replace my outlet in the stairs and in the time span before replacement I would tape a piece foil on the contacts in the master stateroom outlet to use the stair outlet....

You can buy replacement outlets on Ebay. Very inexpensive - my old ones (2001) never worked when the wife plugged in the hose. I took an outlet apart and found weak springs like you find in ink pens. Ordered 2 ones new off EBay and found the new ones have screws over the springs. Dont know if thats better or not but they now work every time the wife plugs in the hose. Thirty minutes total job to remove, splice wires, and reset the 2 outlets.

My 02 360 DA has beam vac and it fires momentarily when I power up stbd on panel but does not when I plug the hose in. Have to flip the switch on the unit to get it to run. Will chase down the above suggestions next time I'm on boat.

Mine does the same, and have not seen any problems with it. I'm going with an undocumented "feature" to audibly tell when you have shore power ;) Hear the vac, we're good.
