What are the differences between a marine BBQ and a standard Webber/yard style one?

Can I use a standard BBQ or do they pose a CO/fire hazard?

I understand they'd be prone to rust a little fast, I'm more thinking of a camping trip then remove when done.

All that said, I'll probably just buy a marine one, but there are a couple of yard ones I'm keen on at the minute.....

Any other tips?

No reason why a Webber Q wouldn't work well, and they are aluminium base so will, last.

From my part, I managed to grab a marine electric BBQ, and love it. I have a generator on board, so do not have to worry about carrying LPG, or the flame being blown out in a breeze.

I love my Magma gas kettle grill, They make legs so you can take it on land. It works really well and I have yet to have it blow out and I have been in some pretty windy areas, We use it almost every time we are on the boat for the day. - All stainless so it is built prettty good.

I have the Magma infra-red retangle grill... I have a mount under my boarding ladder door on the swim platfrom. I used to have the Magma kettle, and it would blow out too often in the wind. My grill was expensive, but it works well, it is designed for boat use, and has a lot of neet accesseries like clip on tables, cooking racks and a carring bag... The pole mount itself was around $100.... As far as using ane electric grill, we prefer not to run the gennerator when the kids are in the water, so for use we like the propane... Also, I like the way the food tastes on the gas grill better than and electric. We have a weber grills at home and love them... but the magma is a great boat grill...

I think the differences is stainless steel/aluminum throughout, and a marine grill will typically have a drip tray.

Having said that, we currently use a small portable/camping grill we got for 30 bucks at a liquidator. I just set it up on the swim platform, or dock. It out performs my force10 barrel style BBQ I had on the Sea Ray, which I would have to light every 5 minutes, and its faster than my buddies Napoleon Marine infrared BBQ. And for 30 bucks, if it breaks, I don't care.

That is an interesting option I had never considered. Does it plug-in to an outlet or is it hard wired?

+1 for the Magma infrared... I use the fishing rod power-mount which you can use to level at any angle, and a WM clamp on fishing rod holder to the trunk rail. I put a piece of clear plastic hose from WM on the rail then the clamp. I also put a rag under the bottom of the rod holder just in case it spins down slightly and bumps the trunk lid (and my vinyl name graphic). So far it hasnt happend. ONly time I've not been happy with it was when someone brought fatty sausages, and another time when someone brought burgers with cheese mixed into the meat. The oil comes out and caused big flare ups and slightly "blackened" food. That's not so much the grill's fault I think.

The other cool attachment I have for it is the insert / plate which you can use for pancakes / breafast food on one side, and grilled veggies/fish on the otherside. Very nice.

First year down on a Solaire infra-red. A little pricey but it grills a juicy piece of meat every time and no flame to blow out.

I have had 4 grills on 2 boats. A Sea B Q, a Magma, a rectangular SS and a Webber. We have lots of room so storing the Webber is no problem. All SS ones are smaller than the webber. The best SS was the SeaBQ. The Webber is bigger. The SS ones all dripped grease on the side of the boat. The Webber is 3 years old and is pitting and the finish is coming off. If the SeaBQ did not drip grease on the boat I would still use it. I expect the Webber to last an other 3 years before the pitting become a problem.

Nothing wrong with using a standard BBQ. The main differance is how it is mounted and with a regular BBQ, you may have to put some kind of protection under the grill.

For those of you with Magma round grills that blow out, Magma designed a new regulator that seems to have solved that problem. I'm not sure what the difference is but we got the new one several years ago and it hasn't blown out yet. The old regulator is all blue (with a black knob). The new one is red and blue.

Here is how mine is mounted, except it sits higher due to the fact that my rail is actually on the trunk hatch itself vice below.

This is a great mount since it lets you level the grill in all directions and also this mount (over the standard rod holder one) lets you firmly lock the mount into the rod holder so it doesnt spin. I've not had any drips that way.

Cheers guys, useful and informative as always.

Will post pics etc once plan executed

Mine has a plug on it, there is an outlet in the back of the boat which involves laying down, bent knock, several swear words............so I plug it into one of the outlets in the kitchen.

I originally posted this type of set up back in Feb '08. It has worked great for us.

I stow it in the engine bay (without the propane of course) on a shelf I made. I made a square notch the pole base slips into and holds it securely.

You can see the painted version here adjacent to the water tank.

I bought a stainless steel grill from Lowes for about $50 or $60. It has lasted 4 seasons now (being stored in the ski locker and getting VERY wet). So far, so good. The only rust issues I have are with the disposible tanks. They rust very bad.

Good thread - timely for me.

I got the grill ( valentines day) - Magma retangular sear burners.

Evaluating my mounting options - have a pretty good handle on the mounting. Will probaly try a rod holder attached to the back compartment - if that doesnt work then will go with a hole for a permanent rod holder.

My current struggle is where to store?

Don't want it in the cabin. First choice was under the aft seat in the cockpit. Grill in canvas bag would fit - but not with the attached mounting for the rod holder.

Any ideas?
