Automatic Fenders

Cars have bumpers and fenders...I am so confused!!!

I was told a long time ago, by a crusty old salt that owned a boat yard that specialized in wooden yachts, that "cars have fenders, boat have bumpers"....told me to never make that mistake again or he would fire me. Never made that mistake again, and to this day they are bumpers. It doesn't matter either way to me, the stupid stuff that sticks with you, and which always brings a smile when I read or hear fender.

+1 on bumpers.... they are bumpers no debate

Interesting. Whenever I hear someone say bumpers instead of fenders it always says inexperience to me. Same when a SCUBA diver calls their fins flippers. I don't know any experienced boaters that call them bumpers...just cottagers who also turn off their boats before they are tied to the dock (or even stopped)! :)

I grew up in Toronto and we all called them bumpers.... I see you're from Ottawa....that explains alot... WTF?..Growup for crying out loud

Haa! I assume you are joking. Is this a Leafs vs Sens thing? Well, the Sens suck right now so no problems there!

There was certainly no prejudice or judgement meant or implied by my post. The fact simply is everyone around here who is a serious (or even quasi-serious) boater, and I certainly don't live in the boating center of the universe, calls them fenders.

That said, my uncle who is a retired fisherman in Nova Scotia would laugh you off the wharf if you called a fender a bumper. Don't call a line a rope around him either...or a bitt a cleat.

Furthering the insanity...are the round fenders/bumpers not also buoys?

In an effort to be "CSR politically compliant" you'll hear me refer to them as "BALLS" if you ever see me around. No ruffled feathers here.

This is how I safely store my balls during winter layup.

Oh boy, I see this thread going into the weeds really quick now!

I did not mean to start an argument, touchy subject. Lets go with the wiki definition, " a fender is a bumper".....Love it.

To be honest I think it is exactly the opposite. "cars have bumpers, boat have fenders". The comparison is to devices that protect the vehicle from bumping into things.

As my mother used to say to my father when she parked the car "If I can't use them to bump into things, why are they called bumpers?"

COVID-19 cabin fever getting to you? Take the happy pill.

OK, lets make this a fun thread:

Bumpers or fenders?
Anchor rope or rode?
Dock ropes or lines?
Bathroom or head?
Kitchen or galley?
Bedroom or stateroom?
Bed or berth?
window or porthole?
Walkie talkie or radio?
Pointy end or bow?
Back end or stern?
Right/left or starboard/port?
Trunk or lazarette?
Steering wheel or helm?
Map or chart?
Floor or deck?
Winch or windlass?

What did I forget? I think if someone came aboard my boat and said that they had lots of experience boating and could they drive my boat, but they used all of the first terms in my list. I think I would not let them drive my boat. Blueone, I think you would do the same.

And for the rest of you out there, there is a long rivalry between those from Toronto (go Leafs) and those from Ottawa (goddamn Senator trash). So I hope that is part of it. People born and raised in Toronto always think the sun shines out of their own a$$holes - (come on bud- just joshing wit ya!)
