OK, some one explain to me how this is acceptable.

In the past two days I have had four people flat out tell me they are coming up to the lake I can take them out on my boat. When did this become the acceptable way to approach this?

One person was in early 20's and barely know him stated he's going out with me this weekend......

No, I'm working on the boat this weekend its a "maintenance " weekend...

How about next weekend...

How about ill get back with you when its good for me (never)!

Next...

Oh you have a boat on Erie you can take my family and our bikes to the islands.

They have ferries that you can ride.

It would be great to see your boat...

I have pictures...

(The worst part is this is my boss) ugghhh

Next...

What's a sea ray? (Wearing a ball cap into work)

Its a boat brand...

You have a boat?

Yes, on lake Erie.

Do you ever fish?

Not in a few years since my fishing buddy passed.

I want to go fishing can we go in a few weeks? Ill buy the gas... ( hum OK that would be almost OK)

What type of motor is in your boat.

Twin 454s...

Oh,I can't afford that but can we still go out?

I am pretty busy with everything I have planned and my school starts back in a few weeks not sure its gonna happen...

Oh OK ill keep in touch....(dang it)

Finally... and the worst one...

Hey Jason its mom...

Hey mom, how are you...

(No polite answer) do you have any one staying with you this weekend?

No, just working on the boat... lots on the agenda..

The kids and I are coming up Saturday and well leave Sunday so you can get your work done. This is there last weekend before school, band, cheer leading, so on, and so on...

I'm screwd now I know I'm going to have to entertain my much younger brother and sis... which is fine but I did have other things on the docket...

What is it with people just thinking you are willing and happy to invite them to you personal vacation? I know its just a weekend but it is a step away from everything in my life... my world is different on Aftica.

So other then strait out just smacking these people and saying no what do you do?

OK, I'm stepping of my podium now... open floor!:smt101

I ignore them unless it's someone I want with me...

My favorite phrase is...."I think we already have something on our schedule for then. I'll have to get back to you." Guess what, I never seem to have the time to get back to people who don't understand that it's rude to invite yourself to something.

I've allways said , boats were hard to own , not because of the boat its self but for that very same thing . I put up with that for years , and those people were the worst people to have aboard, so these days are different .

When we going boating ? as soon as i invite you............am i turning into a SEA RAY snob?

OK, I'm different. If it is people I like, I am happy they reached out for a ride and will enjoy having them. I enjoy my friends enjoying the boat.

But in your story (and it was very entertaining), there were folks that should not have been so forward. Don't burn any bridges (especially the boss), just say this weekend will not work (no need to explain) and nver find the time to get back to them.

I guess stopping by on Sunday afternoon (will be in the area without the boat) is out of the question!

Our latest was when the Admiral invited one of her for,Eric sales guys who's in town this weekend. He replied "great...there will be 8 of us". Janet said no there won't. You and the girlfriend is who the invite is for.

Looks like its just the two of us this Saturday...first time this summer! This will be nice!

Jason,

Since this weekend is already taken by mom and your siblings (the only ones in your story that I would welcome) I will see you next weekend. Please have plenty of cold beer and some steaks ready. Oh and the good ones, filet mignon, not some tough cut of sirloin. Thanks!

Thanks guys just had to vent glad some of you got a laugh....

I don't mind inviting people... I really enjoy company and to entertain but, on my
schedule( I mean I pay the bills WTF)

Todd,

Have a cooler full of cold beer and Steaks will be ready do you want bacon wrapped?

If it's a guy I just tell them they have to look good in a bikini to go out on my boat, that usually shuts them up.

Ha ha.....
Hey man,
You can skip the bacon. I don't want to put you out or anything. BTW, I will be bringing the bar softball team so we can have a hairy leg contest too!! LOL!!!

I like having people on the boat
but all of my friends know it doesn't run on sunshine and rainbows
it requires fuel and maintainence.
I have been asked a couple times to take someone out for the day
but they have all contributed to the cause without being asked.
whether it be dinner at the marina or a chip in for fuel.

Jason, We solved that problem by buying a smaller boat. :smt001

Maybe its cause they live 3000 miles away but I would be glad to take my little brother and sisters out anytime.

As for friends or casual aquaintances, if someone's willing to contribute to gas, for me I am wanting to go out almost every weekend, and if I can get someone to offset the gas bill, the more the merrier. I got a buddy who rarely goes out, but when he does, he brings $50 for gas, plus steaks and beer. That's the kinda buddy you want!

I recently took an old friend, who happens to be fighting a battle with cancer at the moment, to a day and an evening concert at the Baltimore Inner Harbor. While I was fueling up he slipped into the Marina office and attempted to pay the fuel bill. (love these kinds of passengers). Alas, I was one ahead of him and had already arranged payment at the office.

We spent the entire day at the Inner Harbor, enjoyed many of the sites and much food and drink. In the evening we enjoyed a great concert which also happened to be a band on his bucket list. We rolled in (actually floated in) at 2AM (very late for a couple of old guys) exhausted and ready to do it again.

I covered the boat, fuel and concert. He picked up the tab for all the food, drink and touristy stuff. All in all a fair trade! Glad to say he's also doing well and he's always welcome on my boat!

My answer to the original post.....I don't advertise that I have a boat...certainly limits the number of self invites!

If a woman asks to go out on the boat I tell her I have a strict no top rule. She either says no way, I'm not coming or agrees to the rule. Either way, I win!

If a guy invites himself I just laugh.

Have a friend who used to get relative visit him every summer for their vaction. He stopped it by taking one to the liquor store told the person to get all he wanted. They filled up 2 carts and when they went to pay he informed his guest he forgot his walet. Guest stayed for a week but never came back. Try going to the gas dock empty and pull the same trick. Have friend who comes out most years. Rule is he pays all resteraunt meals and alchol. On the first trip out he tried to pay for gas but told him the rules. We eat well and drink when anchored. Same goes for people who visit us in Mexico. Seems to work well. We go where we want when we want so guest on the boat is no problem. If they want a side trip to some place we do not want to go. I arrange for the trip and they pay.

Ha ha.....

OK I'm going to be the D!ck...Hell NO!

I'm fine with people I know on board but complete strangers I'm not happy about it. My regular guests are wonderful. They know and follow the rules and help out when they can.

Just never like when people tell you what they are going to do on your property!
