Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Anyone who owns a VW would be foolish to take it in to have the computer reprogramed, as the EPA will ensure the new programing will pretty much destroy the characteristics of the car that VW owners love. Certainly the resale value is going to take a hit on the affected cars after the fix has been applied.
This.

The EPA likes to pretend that all of their mandates have no detrimental impact. The cars that get the software update, will get poorer fuel economy, generate less torque, and perform poorly. And as Scott mentioned, resale value will plummet.

VW got caught. How many other manufacturer's have implemented something similar?

My wife's car is a 2010 Audi Q7 TDI. It is not mentioned in the current batch of cars, but I believe it will only take some time before the affected vehicles widens to the SUVs even though her's utilizes the AdBlu stuff to keep the NOX emissions down. I saw a blog post today about the possibility of Mercedes and GM facing the same accusations once their performance vs testing data is examined.

I will not allow any updates to our vehicle. We test drove almost every other mid to large SUV made before buying her car and it was a no brainer. The performance and fuel mileage of the TDI engine was far and away a better package than the competitors (we are also Audi snobs we have had a total of 4 of them between us).

I am irritated that the value of the car may take a hit but we don't plan on selling this for many years (I believe that cars should last 10 years at a minimum) and we have had no problems with it for the first 75,000 miles.

It is shocking to me that a decades old company in a country that prides itself on its excellent engineering and manufacturing base did this. This was not some rogue employee in a lab. A lot of people were involved, and likely some top execs. Their stock is getting hammered, and they deserve it. The gov fines are just the beginning. The suits that follow after that are estimated to be in the Billions potentially.

As far as the statement "I will not allow any updates to our vehicle"… Not sure about where you are, but our government holds ALL the cards when it comes to vehicle licensing. If your car is not compliant (whatever they decide that is), you don't get a renewal tag for your vehicle plate AND your plate number is put in a gov't database as one which is not to be on the road. Cops with "auto-plate-reader" capability will soon spot those vehicles, impound them on the spot, and leave you will nasty fines and expenses.

If I owned an affected vehicle and had to put up with reprogramming that diminished my vehicle experience, I'd be looking for compensation for damages.

Not sure how VW is going to weather this storm. Sad state of affairs in the business world.

VW did a little cheat with those cars. They didn't want to use expensive SCR, and NOx adsorber so they went with a much cheaper ERG based system. The downside of massive amounts of ERG are mentioned above and include reduced power and greater fuel consumption. The other bigger downside is that lots of ERG will also increase engine operating temps and engine stress. I'd imagine those engines aren't destined for long lives.

I believe that the 3.0l V6 uses an SCR, so they probably didn't screw with the software for that. I'll have to ask a friend who works for Porsche, which also uses some of the Audi 3.0l V6 diesels, next time I see him.

I am not a diesel engine expert by any means, just someone who reads the news at night.

However, from what I have read, I believe your statement is not accurate. VW programmed their engines, through software changes, that caused some of the air pollution systems from to “kick in” while they were being tested. IE, the engine knew someone had a thermometer in its rear end, so the NOx, Sox, etc were reduced.

The system went back to “normal”, and higher emissions, when the engine was not being tested. It was not just a matter of different, or cheaper systems they were using. Again, just my .02 from what I have read.

Here's how it works.

Audi is in.

There are 11 million VW products affected. There are….wait for it…..1.2 BILLION vehicles on the road today. Vehicles are defined as cars, light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks, and buses, but does NOT include off-road or heavy construction vehicles. Note the absence of motorcycles and those antique 2 cycle scooters all over the streets of China and India.

Of the 11 million, only 482,000 are in the U.S.

So we’re talking this particular VW accounting for less than one percent of all the accounted for vehicles in the WORLD and less than .04 percent where U.S. sales are placed against the total world vehicle population. Add the other non counted vehicles I mentioned and that figure drops like a brick.

This is a typical U.S. political hack at best. WHY? It’s an election year and bringing this up keeps the sheeple’s eyes off a failed economy, failed war, failed immigration….need I continue?

Riddle me this ….. The problem goes back to 2009. Why did it take the Obama administration 8 years to figure this out……Or did it.

Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner ladies & gentlemen!

VW & The U.S. Government have known about this for a long, long time. Why now? Who knows, or cares for that matter. It was mentioned earlier that VW stock has taken a big hit. I hope no one thinks VW cares about that at this point. After all, the only people that loose money when a stock price drops are the sellers that bought it at a higher price. But I digress, VW will sell more vehicles, at a higher profit margin, in 2018 than they did in 2015.

He didn't figure it out... it was a team of students and professors at WVU in Morgantown WV!

Yes they did….And only black lives matter. Call it my foil hat if you want, when the Obama administration has plausible deniability…..they are found guilty each and every time. Hats off to the WVU kids. BUT….it wouldn’t be the first time the feds used a (street gang, university, race creed sexual orientation……) for personal gain.

To me it doesn’t make sense. What kid with the brains to get through engineering school would eff up his/her chances at a job after college by divulging a fact that could ruin them.

Wow, it never ceases to amaze me how convoluted an Internet board can become.

This thread went from a discussion about a German company making very in appropriate mods to their pollution control systems, to Obama, the US economy, and black lives matter.

Right, the software hack defeated the EGR system.

All of those VW engineers should be invited by the President to the White House because of the techology they developed. Oh wait student built clock gets first choice.

Very inappropriate! Puhleez! Anyone who chips their own car does the exact same thing annually.

The VW trains have the cheating software also.
