Recently there have been a couple of threads along the lines of, "Why You Got Into Boating? or "What Do You Like About Boating?"

I've always felt there were 2 kinds of boat owners. First, there are people that, well....own boats. Next, there are Boaters. I'm a Boater. I don't need to be going anyplace, I just enjoy being on the boat....most any boat. I like working on it, making it better, cruising, anything actually as long as it involves boats. I look at Yachtworld and Boat Trader (Frank W. says its Boat Porn) when I'm eating a sandwich, I look at Boat Parts on eBay in case I see something I don't already have. Everything is better on a boat. I've cried like a little girl every time I've sold a boat. I got my first boat at 15 and I'm now 67. I've owned a 10', 12', 17', 22', 23', 24', 26', 36' and a 52'. I now know that I will own a boat as long as I can safely handle it.

Now the flip side is people that, own a boat. For most of them they use it Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. They're the ones that exclaim on Memorial Day to the crowd waiting to go for a ride. "....Damn boat, it ran perfectly last September." We all have "their boats" in our marinas and storage lots. "What a waste" we often say.

I'm not knocking the Boat Owner....what he does with his boat is his business and money. What a shame, though....

My name is Shawn and I am a BOATER!

Hahaha. Right on.

I think boaters stay somewhere safe over those holidays that boat owners theirs our for a spin.

boaters (yes I admit I am one also) are the ones staying at the docks during the holidays to let the 'boat owners' have their fun and wonder aimlessly around with absolutely no knowledge of the navigation rules or guidelines....

I made the HUGE mistake of taking my boat out this past Labor Day....we only went about a mile away from our dock...we thought we would be safe behind a large island in our lake....but somehow a 'boat owner' found me and came within 50' of hitting me broadside on the port side while running wide open in a 20' bow rider full of people.....the driver (I will not call him a captain) was turned around talking to people in the back of the boat....luckily I saw him at the last minute as we were just drifting minding our own business.....I yelled at the top of my lungs while waiving my arms in the air and he finally heard me and turned away missing my boat by about 50'.....I told the Admiral lets go back in and let these idiots have their fun.....

In the short 5 months of our season, I'm at the lake on my boat from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, every weekend. My summer vacation is also spent at the lake, on the boat.

Hello my name is Little Ducky........ and I'm a Boater. ;)

I use my boat as one would use a cabin. It's 2.5 hours away from the house in a city I would love to retire one day and even when it's winterized I stop and stay a night or 2 just to check up on it and to give it a little scrub on the off season. It in a covered slip and even when it's raining I'm chilling plus it makes for good nap. :)

We are boaters. We are on the boat every weekend during the season (May thru October here), rain or shine, hot or cold. We've been known to sleep over on the hard as well. Vacation is spent on the boat. We take it for a spin when we feel like it. We don't leave the dock on the crazy days such as July 4th weekend.

Must be nice to enjoy a covered slip!

Our last boat we spent 80 nights a year on it. Of those, I would estimate 10-11 were spent in our home marina. We had to travel from TX to FL to get on the boat - so most stays were 10-12 nights. Whatever day we arrived we left either that evening or early the next morning. When we returned to the marina would be late in the day. Spent the evening and the next morning getting everything in shape - then would fly out that day.

I am a boater except life makes me a boat owner. My boat is at a marina 2hrs from home and we have a beach house there too. Still working, and my career means long hours and often over weekends. So don't spend nearly enough time on the boat. Looking forward to retiring and getting fanatical about glossy gellcoat.

My name is George, and I AM a Boater

During the warmer months I schedule my work days around the tides. Rain days are for sleeping and old movies on the boat. While she is no slip queen we very rarely go out on any holidays. I spend as many nights on her as my wife will allow. Sunday is meant for one thing, coffee and a newspaper on the morning tide. Winter is as Summer is but without going out...

Yup, I'm a boater. I don't get to spend as much time on board as I'd like, but that's what happens when life gets in the way of living/boating. We put in a pool 3 years ago and it definitely cut into my boating time.

I've been a boater for about 65 years now and I'm on my 7th boat, the last 3 have been Sea Rays.

We take a few trips on board every year and are already planning a trip to Portland, OR (240 miles) in March. We'll leave the boat there for ~2 weeks to get all new isinglass and a new upper bimini made, then cruise it back to our home slip.

I'm sure many would think we are crazy, but I say my name is Bill and I am definitely a boater. I have had boats from 10' to 30' and just enjoy everything about all of them. Just as content helping others work on their boats as well. Some of my best boat trips never leave the dock.

So funny... sounds like AA.

We all have a problem. You know that right? ;)

I think my favorite days one the boat are when it rains.

Thank goodness for all the birthdays and holidays in winter. We'd never make it through!

My co-worker asked me the other days, "so, how many more weekends you have left on the boat?" I replied, "buddy, we're still counting months, not weekends."

We are Boaters! I talk to friends who are so happy with their boats, "10 years old and only 150 hours on it." Makes me sad. We bought our boat to use it. We average 70-100 hours a summer. We bought it to ride in, ski, tube, and play. Not to look pretty at the dock.

I've been shopping for another boat and I'm surprised how many boat owners are NOT BOATERS! A quick conversation usually confirm my suspicions. I want to buy a boat from a BOATER!

That's a great point!

I too stay off the water on holiday weekends. I wouldn't want the Admiral to know this but some of my best days on the boat are when she isn't there. I can tinker and piddle with whatever I want.

Remember Honey....I said SOME....

Full season boater! Every weekend we can, summer holidays spent on the boat. Last year we did 4 days over xmas on it as well as over New Years. Boating in the snow is beautiful!
