No boat....no engines
I have always felt there are two types of people that have boats: Boat Owners and Boaters.

A Boat Owner is someone that takes the boat out a few times a year and doesn't understand why things break. "It worked last year. Stupid boat." The marinas and storage yards are full of these types. They're the boats that sit neglected and dirty for months at a time.

A Boater is someone who can't stand being away from the boat. Period. They want to be on it whether its in the marina or in the driveway. They are the ones the wife finds after work in the boat, in the driveway, behind the wheel with a beer, making motor sounds. Or at the marina, they are always doing something to it, anything really, just to be on it.

I am a Boater. I can go to the marina for the weekend and just tinker, socialize with fellow Boaters, or do nothing. Just as long as I am on the boat. And when I am not on the boat, I am doing something like being on this site, surfing ebay or the web looking for boating related stuff. All I want to do is get back to the boat.

How about the rest of you? Are you hooked like me?

Hi, my name is Darin, and I am a...... BOATER!! As a newbie, its nice to know someone understands me. :smt100 My wife thinks Im crazy, and its a good thing I cant keep the boat in my yard, otherwise I would have moved out months ago. And lets not forget, scraping money out of the budget to buy the next gadgets, options, or supplies. Thanks NorCal for giving this a name. :smt038

Well I must be a true boater I once made a statement that if any of my family members were plaining a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation between April and October to expect nothing more than a card and maybe a video from me because I would not give up a weekend on the boat.

I am quite sure the folks at West Marine are happy that my marina opens this Saturday. They must be sick of seeing my face every other day. When I left there today I told them it may be the last time for awhile. Now to get all the new toys on the boat. I would say I'm a boater or certainly want to be one.

The manager of our High & Dry tried to talk me into paying $200/month for them to wipe my boat down before the put it away. His sales pitch was "that way you don't have to spend 2 hours cleaning it before we put it up every Sunday". I told him that I would actually spend 5 hours cleaning it if the Admiral wouldn't kill me. All I do during the off season is look for things to put on the boat for the next season.

I have passed this passion on to my kids too:smt038. My youngest son plays soccer at a very high level. He informed me that he wanted to quit the team if that meant we could be on the boat more. And he loves soccer.

Guess we're boaters.

A boater,I eat it,drink it,adore it ,its my therapy
my wifes also........how lucky am I ?

I'm a boater. Little example... Many years ago I was dating a very nice, successful, pretty girl. After much dating, took her for a ride on the boat one fine spring day. She didn't like it, wasn't interested, and didn't want to do it again. Can you say "last date?" Sure you can! The boaters here probably saw that one coming.

Best regards,
Frank

375 hrs. on the engines last year and thats not counting the relax time at the dock. I think I fall in the boater catagory?

I can never get over how many people spend a $1000 a quarter for the slip and never are there let lone take the boat out.

There was a 280 SD with so much mold growing on the inside of the camper canvas that I turned it in as an environmental hazard.

What are we? We bought our 340 March 07. The plan was and still is to relocate to Punta Gorda, south Fl. May 08 our house is still for sale. Great deal on the boat 02 112 hrs thats why we bought it before we sold the house. Wife wanted this boat and this boat only. We have had her dry docked since day one. (free of charge at a friends boat storage). This is our first boat but we did get to spend one weekend on her when we first bought her in SC from the previous owner. We never had so much fun. It is killing us having to stay here and not being able to use the boat. We live 50 miles form lake lanier and at $500 per mo for slip and use her 1 day wk at the most and no water for most of the summer we thought it would be better for us just to wait til we move. I even mention selling her and the wife said that's not going to happen. We still go out and check things out clean her just the normal messing around once or twice per month. We just can't wait to move and get her out in the water. So i guess at the present we are owners. Total bummer!

hhmmm...is there something in between? While we take our boat out most every weekend, respect it and take care of it , I really am not on the obsessive side. (and that's probably 'cause I just don't have the time to be for one thing)

I own a boat because I am a boater (why else would one own a boat?)

Am I missing something?

I think to be a true "Boater you have to go out on your boat in a winter jacket just before the water freezes. Then hurry and winterize it before it freezes. Then get it back in the water and dodge the ice chuncks in the spring. Sorry, flashbacks from NY. We boat year round in Eastern, NC.
