Anyone wanna talk about boats?

"New motors. 2009 8.1L motors. I sent you a PM"....the only interesting thing in the thread and you sent a PM...jeez.

My boat needs a new engine. How is that for some boat talk?

....and I don't want to talk about it.

yes I went to the yard today for a update on work
1) arch is being drilled and taped, wires run for radar and ant.
2) new helm 2 layers of glass and should be ready monday
3)freshwater system should be done new ho2 heater +new lines to galley and head.
winter feels like he wants to show-up early:smt009

Can you tell us why you have two new motors?

Sure.

I bought a couple of Mercury Reman long blocks and they leaked oil/had low oil pressure. So, they were replaced with Merc Reman long blocks and they leaked oil/had low oil pressure. So, they were replaced with Merc Reman long blocks and one of them blew a hole in the side.

After speaking with Mercruiser, they agreed that I had been very patient with them and their products and made me an offer I could not refuse to replace the 7.4L Reman long blocks with a couple of new 8.1L engines and transmissions.

The folks at Mercruiser are my new bestest friends.

Good things come to those who wait.. or something like that.

WOW, I feel sorry for you guys. We'll be on the boat over Thanksgiving and New Years and plan to have the boat out every day. Of course, then I get to pay for a slip over the winter too...

Driving in circles.
Just dropped in two new motors and need to get past the break in. Depends on the weather how far we go from home.

Hi Rick,

Sorry to hijack this thread, but how many hours did you get out of your original engines?

Going to Madisonville, LA this weekend for the Wooden Boat Festival.....big party! In addition to lots of wooden boats, they have a home-made boat race that's a blast.

Madisonville! I lived just north of there on the Tchefuncta River from '80 - '86. What a great area!

Almost Fall

The weather forecast last weekend was favorable and called for the first "cold" front of the season to blow through.

We hit the water early to flat seas and beautiful cruising with a 10 knot breeze. The air temp was in the low 80's with seas at 86 degrees and you could feel that the humidity was out of the air!

We cruised north to Estero Island and beyond stopping along the way to enjoy the bird life. There were lots of roseate spoonbills on the sandbars, a sure sign that fall was near.

For lunch we stopped at the Fishhouse and enjoyed lunch on the porch with the first cool breeze of fall making it enjoyable to sit outside; well at least relative to what we are used to.

We spent the afternoon hitting the beach with Brodie (our lab) chasing other dogs and enjoying a relaxing swim or two in the gulf. Afterward we were hungry and number one broke out some refreshments and food. The admiral had fixed an excellent cheese and fruit platter (best brie I have had in quite some time) which we enjoyed as the sun went down.

I love the fall sunsets. We usually get a few tall clouds this time of year along the skyline that frame the evening sky, remnants of a fading rainy season.

Sunday night was no exception. The sun set below the horizon and left a salmon and pink sky with accents of orange and red painted against the towering cloud forms.

To the east the moon started to rise and was peaking through the sparse clouds casting a light across the water and chasing the darkness that was creeping in from the south.

There is no twilight in south Florida. When the sun sets darkness is quickly upon you. So as the sun set on the starboard bow, the moon light was a welcome companion that cast a bright light across the port to help guide us home.

A 160 degree heading shown bright on the compass as the steady hum of the engine echoed through the night air. The Admiral was content to sit on the back seat and enjoy the evening as we cruised through the darkness toward home. Before long the red lights that sit atop our building came into sight and 20 minutes later I was pulling the boat up to the dock.

It was an end to a beautiful weekend. And as I cleaned the boat I felt the spray of a late night rain that turned into a warm shower. ..... Fall is almost here.

You put in THREE sets of defective blocks?

OUCH OUCH OUCH.

You mechanic probably is so good with the installs at this point that he could do it in 20 minutes blindfolded.

The boat had Merc Reman blocks in it when I bought it used, and they had about 300 hours on them. One of the engines had low oil pressure when I bought it and that was the first one that was changed. While dealing with subsequent issues on that motor, one of the ECM wires shorted out on the other engine, causing it to shut off underway and hydrolock. That was replaced with block number 2 and we just kept replacing them from there because of oil leak/oil pressure issues.

Once I contacted Mercriser about the problems, they stepped up to the plate and did what was necessary to make it right.

It would be interesting to hear how different the boat performs with the 8.1 compared to the 7.4 engines. Have you changed propellers? Sea Ray can provide you with the specs on the propellers that they installed on the 8.1 boats from that year. They are most likely different (rake, cup, etc.)from the props for the 7.4 boats. I am curious about this because of my experience with those boats from those years.

No prop change yet. Only have 7 hours on the new motors. Once I get through the break-in, I'll know if I am able to hit WOT rpms and whether the props need adjustment.

THIS IS TERRIBLE!

Non boating section of the forums, and you dorks are STILL talking bout boats. Sheesh!

Boats, or babes?

Even if you can hit max wot, you still could be giving up alot of performance by using the wrong prop. If my memory is correct, the props got a more aggressive cup and maybe 1 more inch of pitch when going to the 8.1. Also the blade surface area was different too. I was involved with 2 or 3 repowers on the same model year boats and all repowers went from 7.4 to 8.1 engines.

I've been to Madisonville before, but this will be my first trip to the wooden boat fest. From early Spring till late Fall they have lots of poker runs in this area, and lots of other boating activity....I suspect the crowd will draw from New Orleans heavily as well as Mobile, and the entire Gulf area. Looking forward to it....rain or shine.

Thanks for the heads up. I appreciate it. Do you think the prop guys are the best folks to talk to or do you think Sea Ray or the dealer?
