I heard this product advertised on the radio and thought it would be a possible solution for my lack of a radar arch to install a Digital TV anttenna on my boat. Has anyone tried this product? I have a LCD on the boat but it hooked up to a PS2 for movies and games only.

I love my slingbox. If you can get connected at your marina with broadband it should be fine. If you arte trying to connect through your cell phone you will have to live with reduced quality. I use my slingbox on my laptop via my cell phone all the time. The quality isn't the best, but cruising up the highway on long trips watching TV is a great way to pass time. As a passenger of course.

I too second Jim's opinion on the Sling Box.

I have a very early version and use it all of the time.
When I am able to find a hot spot I just plug my laptop into the 22" digital on the boat and watch the cable feed from my home.

Slingbox is something I also considered. Now that I am at a marina with WiFi I may look at it again. I would be running my laptop and connecting it to my 19" monitor on the boat... I know that the iPhone app while able to stream over the air you can't use the TV out cable with the iPhone with it, so that is a negative....

I use sling box pro all of the time either through my phone or at marina's with wifi. I recently updated all my software and it has worked much better lately. Used it from my boat last weekend (via Phone) with no problems. I am located in Central Ohio and have used it on the erie islands as well as lake cumberland.

Do you have any install pictures of your LCD? I've thought about it, but am still contemplating where and how I want to install it.

Slingbox is like an ugly girl after 6 beers...

"Looks GREAT!"

Verizon now has a 5GB/month limit on aircards and you'll chew that up in a few hours... and then get an $1800 verizon bill...

I do not have pictures yet but I can get some next week when I go out the the boat and post them.

I purchaced the LCD TV that had the best sound quality (I did not want to mess with running the TV audio into the boat speakers) and was the appropriate size for my boat. I did not go with a TV with the DVD player included because these typically break before the TV. The PS2 allows you to play games, DVDs using the game controller as a remote, and is not expensive.

I used a LCD wall mount braket from best buy and removed the hex bolts at the elbows and replaced them with sturdier machene bolts lock washers and nuts from Home depot hardware department to stiffen the joints and allow them to be locked in place since I am in potentially rough seas in Galveston Bay.

I was able to remove the microwave and install the bracket on the bulhead between the galley and the vberth. this was the best location because it allowed the monitor to swing into view from anywhere in the cabin and already had a duplex outlet on the vberth side. I drilled a hole in the bulkhead into a galley storage compartment above the microwave and installed a gromet to feed the power chord from the PS2 to the outlet and run the game control wires and RCA cable from the PS2 to the TV. pluged in the TV and PS2 into the existing outlet. This works on Shorepower or when I have the generator running. 12 volt converter can be added if you want to watch while underway or if you dont have a generator.

The installation was quick and allows all of the components and movies/games to be stored out of view (in the galley storage compartment. a few zip ties to tidy up the exposed cable to the bracket and your in business!

I'll try to get pics soon.

If you jailbreak your iPhone and install TVout app from the Cydia store then you can use the Apple component or composite cables to watch slingbox from your iPhone on your TV. Alternatively, you can use a MacBook Pro with a Mini-DisplayPort to DVI to HDMI adapter to stream in HD to your TV. If you hack your mobile config on your iPhone then you can actually tether your iPhone to your MacBook Pro via bluetooth and watch streaming TV in HD over 3G while your at hook!

I'm just sayin'

Where shall we start...

1. You stream HD over 3G on AT&T (or any other carrier) and you'll go over your monthly limit in 2 movies and get charged out the a$$. That is not a solution. Just because it "works" does not mean it "works".... devil is in the details.

2. Slingbox resolution (like Netflix) is going to scale based on bandwidth. If it looks good on a mobile phone it DOES NOT mean it will look good on a 20" (or greater) screen. Plus... see point (1) above.
