It looks like the move to Shippensburg, Pa is a sure thing. The realtor said Raystown Lake is about 1 hr 35 min away. Quite do able for me.

So has anyone been on this lake.

Another option is to move closer to Hagerstown Md and the drive to Baltimore, google maps at 1 hr 30 min.

I'm willing to live closer to the water than my work. Is that wrong?

I have been to Raystown lake and think it is a very beautiful clean lake, good for boats your size, but terribly crowded on the weekends. If you want to boat on the Chesapeake and its tributaries, you will have some difficulty finding places to safely take your boat. The Severn and Magothy rivers come to mind and would be relatively close should you decide to live near Hagerstown. (By the way, Maryland is far superior in every way to PA) We live in central MD so feel free to ask any questions about the area and good luck!

I am really looking hard at Hagerstown but want to be near fresh water too. I don't want to get on big water and need to hug the shore line for fear of bigger boats or large waves.
Man I hate leaving NC!!

Thanks for your help and I'll be looking for more when we finally make our move.

Far Superior? That seems like a very strong statement there Jim! :) Regardless of the battle over the mason-dixon line, I happen to really like PA....especially the northern part of the bay (havre de grace) which would give you fresh water until you started traveling south. Best of both worlds. Plus, who wants to live in a state a turtle as the college mascot? It is a bit of a hike from Ship though...might not like the commute.

My neighbor keeps his 30' Scarab on Raystown lake. It is very pretty there, although I've never boated on the lake. MD has the bay and its one of my favorite areas. PA has alot more diverse topography, however alot less boating water. Where in Shippensburg are you looking? There are some nice new developments being built outside of town on the hill.

We are looking along 81 interstate from Hagerstown to Ship. Need to be by the medical complex in Hagerstown for the admiral. We'll be going up to scout the area in a couple weeks so we'll see where things are at. I work for a great company and they are paying for two, week long scouting trips to be concluded before Sept. Along with good signing bonus they have offered an advance in positon. Can't even come close to what is being offered here in NC right now.

Your realtor is correct. It will take you an hour and half or less to Raystown. I live in Carlisle, Pa and it takes me about that to get to the lake. I boat there pretty much every weekend in the summer months and we love it. The lake is very clean and warms up nice in the summers. Water temps. around 80 degrees. The boat traffic has not been too bad these last couple of years. The only crowded times are the major holidays.

As for your boat size, it is not too small. My first boat on the lake was an 18'.Average boat lenghts are from 18 to 30'. Hope this is of some help to you, Barry

All depends what you are looking for, indoors/outdoors? Several places for outdoors but not a lot of indoors.

Come visit us in Williamsport! 10 miles of calm water and family fun. The channel is marked but we love to give tours, Mike.

Volvo has a partnership with the college there and we are in and out quite often. I do remember the channel on the drive in. I'll look you up next time I'm there teaching a class or when we move I'll tote the boat up there for a weekend. The Holiday Inn in town is very good and the down town pubs are excellent. We eat at the little restaurant beside the hotel when we are there. Great home cooking.

OldSkool, I live about 1.5 hours from Raystown and go there regularly. If you go on a busy holiday weekend, you will get bounced around a bit. I have had the 19.5' Tahoe there during a holiday weekend and we decided to stay away from the main traffic areas. But it is a great body of water. Offers nice no wakes, places to ski and tube, open her up, etc. One of my favorites. Seven Points Marina is going to be your largest full service marina.
I have also been to Northeast Maryland, great time with good fishing if you are into that. Hit up Woody's Seafood Restaurant for some great food, but plan on waiting a little in the summer on a weekend. But very worth it. Welcome into the area. Let me know if I can help with any info.

Sounds good OldSkool! I taught part time at Penn College for 5 years and produced TV shows for them for about 10 years. Good people there and here. Your welcome to contact me anytime 570-916-9044. My 270 is in the water for the summer if you want to go for a ride anytime. My schedule is very flexible, Mike.

Sounds great guy's. I'll look you up when I get up there. One of my colleaques was there at the college last week .
Thanks for the contact info.

How can you possibly make a stupid statement like that and still own a Searay.....most people from Maryland own Bayliners.....and live in Baltimore.....and are Democrats.....and actually claim ownership of Steny Hoyer.....and mary their sisters ! Geeze......Nancy Pelosi is from Maryland!

I have been to Raystown Lake and it is nice. I will also say that the upper Chesapeake around Havre de Grace, Perryville, North East river is a great place to boat and fish. You will probably have more diversity here than in PA. However, Like Autovette wrote, except for the Bayliner crack, we have some idiots here. Nancy, Steny and good ole Martin O'malley. Taxes here are a pain in the pocket. Most military retirees live in PA to avoid the taxes on the pension. I should move but the second wife won't let me. Well sometimes when we argue she does say go....hmmmmm...... Anyway, it is all good.
Good luck,

MD has terrible gun laws....could never move there. The same with NY....beautiful water to boat on but the "City" and it's laws ruin the mostly rural state of NY. The finger lakes are awesome, Mike.

Mike,
I grew up in upstate NY. Lived on a big 600 acre farm. Started hunting when I was 14 (with a license) small game and then big game. Hunted woodchucks prior to 14. Little by little the influences of a few started changing it for those that have hunted or owned guns. I moved away from there in 1972 when I joined the Army and except for a three year tour at West Point haven't been back. I did like living in the Poconos during my 5year duty station.
Md/NY both have beautiful bodies of water but I wouldn't want to live there. Damn I do!

I grew up in PA on my grandfathers farm. Out with a 410 shotgun when I was 12. What were my folks thinking. We'd go from sun up to sun set and never get home till dark. Those were the days. Looks like I'll be moving back there next spring. Met the senator from Chambersburg area and he's a huge outdoors/hunting type. He supported the right to protect your property law in Pa. Using extreme force to protect your land and family. That's pretty cool.

Oh well, looks like the next time Old Skool see's water it will be on Raystown.
