Had boats all my life but last year ventured into something we can spend the night on and take to the Bay. Didnt get to go out much last year --end of summer weekends seemed to always rain. Im on the James in Newport News.
Where do you like to go for the day or weekend. Im thinking my first adventure will be to Cape Charles to the Bay Resort. Not exactly roughing it but seems like a good start.
Any places you like to stay on the hook?

Chippokes, Jamestown Beach, Rt 5 bridge near the campground. Smithfield Station (up your way). Hook around to the York and anchor near the Pub. Deltaville is our goal this year.

We have a few CSR members here in Deltaville which is a great place to keep a boat close to the Bay if you want a covered dock. I will say that we enjoy the area very much and it requires a car to get anywhere here as nothing is close to a dockage area. Come see us but if your're headed this way go further up the Rappahanock River as we do to either the Town docks at Urbanna or over to Irvington to the Tides Inn for the weekend.

Love Deltaville area to keep our boat in but when we aren't on jet skis and goofing off with others we pull the lines on board and head to other areas.

good ideas. we really want to try Deltaville and the Tides. Doesn't Tides Inn have two marinas to stay at? Any thoughts?
If you are in the James for dinner a really good hole on the wall is chuck-o-mucks off the pagan. Its on the way to Smithfield station but not as far off the James. We like it better than Smithfield station. Watch the tides there , can be really strong . Be sure to follow the buoys all through there --gets shallow.
On the other extreme is dinner or lunch at Kingsmill Resort Marina restaurant.

KM is nice but very close to where my boat is (5 mins). I like the ride to Smithfield and saw the other place but didn't stop. We still like riding up tp Rocketts Landing in Richmond for the Fourth. Spent a couple of hours in Deep Creek about two weeks ago. Next warm day I'm headed up to Jordan Point, there is a marina up there I want to check out.

I'm only about 15 minutes from that Marina (Jordan Point). In fact my picture in my signature is from that marina. I have mine at SBH (Appomattox Boat Harbor) off the James. I don't like how far it is inland, but it's cozy, quiet, and cheap. Floating docks too!

A.B.H. is where I want to come check out. If they don't get a lift soon I'm gonna have to come up to Jordan and get pulled

How much does your boat weigh? Jordan charged me $285 to put it in the water from the 18-wheeler. Didn't take long, but I think that's a little pricey.

9500lbs. I haven't called them yet to get a price. I was guessing $8 to $10 per foot and blocking fees

We were told last week we have a lift coming....fingers are crossed

+1 to jaywood's. Jordan Point is a fly trap. Nice marina, but you'll spend more time cleaning your boat than using it. Next would be Hopewell city docks. Cheap, but no amenities and a political quagmire. Next is Anchor Point. BTDT. Pass it at all cost. GREAT potential and no effort. Something is not right there. My two cents. Next is Small Boat Harbor where jay is and I was. Great place. Good people and a great atmosphere. I left for personal reasons as well as to get off the James and closer to the bay.

Guys,

Phil pulled my 330 on his hydraulic & blocked it. Jay, I want to say it was cheaper than Jordan. I watched him do a 38 Bayliner. I "think" he also did the 44 Wellcraft go fast in front of his shop.

dwna1a, what are you looking to have done?

(EDIT ADD)----- Phil has brought his trailer to River's Rest to haul and launch. I can't speak to the cost, but it may be cheaper than the fuel to get to and from SBH.

Yeah, I spoke to Phil about taking mine out and he said we can do whenever - he's fairly flexible (but don't call him on a pretty Sunday afternoon).

David, are you suggesting the Rivers Rest idea to me or dwna1a?

dwna1a.

Phil did a short haul for me. I can't recall the cost. I don't know who is lifting at Anchor point. I dont' think they can lift inboards.

David, ether have a loose prop and a bad cutlass, but I also need to pull both props and have them tuned up.

I'm not a big fan of Rivers Rest, go, have lunch some drinks, yea it's fine, but to stay over night or to slip up....no. There's a lot of fast boat traffic along that stretch of the river and the amounts of wakes get out of hand at times. Don't get me wrong it is a nice place and very good food at a good price....

What is there really to do there? Age group 50+?

IF you live closer to Small Boat Harbor than where you berth, SBH is where you want to be. Make arrangements with Phil as to when you want to be hauled. If not, Taylor's Marina (804-966-5523) on the upper Chick has good lift capacity. I don't know if they have mechanics on site.

As for the props, I have had great luck with Wildcat in Chesapeake. http://www.wildcatprops.com/.

I have no affiliation w/ any of the above. Last I checked, Taylor's had ethanol free fuel.

Other than being closer to the bay and well protected from the weather, not much. As for the wakes, that's a political quagmire that's killing them. It's a no win. It's a shame too, as I've seen the development plans. It's a shame too. It was no Governors Landing, but the final product piqued my interest enough to consider putting my house on the market. Time will tell.
