Hi !
After really getting into the refurb of my 1977 240WE I/O , I became aware of the
lack of parts being stocked for this fine craft.
I was at a marina out on Lake Oconee (just in case Lanier becomes a dust bowl) and was
being shown the boat storage yard and I happened to see a bunch of boats just piled up at the far end.
I asked the owner if I could take a look at this collection of boats just left in
lieu of back due rent.
To my surprise, there were about 6 or 7 boats with the OMC stringer I/O's in them.
There were some old Merc Alphas or pre-Alphas units mixed in. Most of the motors were
trashed or just missing. The I/O units were still there ! Just waiting to be plucked out.
I'm considering a new hobby.... removal, restoring, resale of OMC I/O units.
I'm just curious if there is any interest in this product line, used OMC electric stringer I/O
parts.

I'm also experimenting with converting a OMC electric stringer I/O setup to a Merc I/O.
I'm just not into fishing that much. I do like:
Boats, motors, water skiing, cruising, fixing things (boats, cars, trucks, computers).

I, too, have a 70s vintage 240 SRV WE and am in the process of restoring it. Getting all new deck hardware, carpet and headliner plus looking at repowering. Can you tell me what you have learned about switching out the old OMC for a newer Mercruiser system? Thanks, Seacure

On my last boat ('75 Penn Yan) I had an electric shift OMC. Only game in town for parts was Doug Russell Marine in Worcester, MA, and they were very pricy. Not very friendly, either. Wish I'd known about your "find" then!!

I'd say there would be a market for good quality and fair pricing of parts for these old girls. They were installed in a lot of cool older boats that have a lot of life left in 'em.

Just my $.02 worth.......

Cheers,

Bill

I had considered swapping out my stringer too!!! Keep us posted on how that is going. I thought about checking with Sea Ray and seeing if there is a retro kit available. The stringer works fine most of the time, but it is 30 years old and (as you said) parts are hard to come by.

I've had some luck in obtaining some boats that were left at a boat storage facility for
almost naught. Some of them have the OMC ball drive assemblies and some have
the early Merc alpha drives.
The marina is going to close for a year for a makeover and the owner wanted these
old boats disposed of real quick. So, my brother and I are hauling them out to his
storage area where we are removing all of the salvageable items.
Hate to have the boat hulls crunched up at the recycling center.
But, I don't have the room to store them or the time to sell them.

The Merc drive assy's are going to be really fun to try out on a conversion project.
I believe the best way is going to get away from the Stringer mount and go with a
complete Merc I/O and Engine setup as a package. It seems that the Merc outdrive
assy puts a lot of the engine driving force on the Transom assy.
The Stringer units put that force on the hull stringers. Hence the term "Stringer" drive.
I know for a fact my boat has a plywood/fiberglass transom that is about 2" thick.
The older(classic) Sea Rays have really thick hulls and transoms.
So, these boats may be able to do a conversion with very few structural modifications.
The I/O lift mechanism and steering are the 2 biggest mechanical issues.

I may use one of the stringer hulls as a conversion project hull before I tear
into my own boat.
Boy, I really love this stuff !!!!

HI !

Exactly what is the symptom with the trim motor?
Most of the time it isn't the motor. It is the relays that
go bad.

But, I believe I can get a motor for your setup if your motor is kaput.
Can you take some pictures of the unit you have and send them to
robertj.scarborough@comcast.net. Or some sort of a part number from the
motor.
