Here is how I installed my new salon TV.
Built a shelf and fastened it to the orginal tv slider board. Fastened the TV to "L" brackets. Through bolted the "L" bracket to the shelf unit. Installed into the hole.

I chose a TV with a flat bottom, so that it would sit on the shelf for additional support. Some TVs have radius bottoms and that would not work. For my TV I had the shelf stickout about 2 inches from the wall to accomodate the TV depth and have it flush against the wall. Now, I also have a spot for the DVD player below the TV.

Nice job on the TV installation... did you have the mounting brackets fabricated or did you buy them in-store?

Standard 10" L bracket from big box home improvement store. I made sure the holes in the bracket lined up with the mounting holes on the tv.

Great job, what size LCD is that. We just purchased a 22", but yours looks a little bigger.

It's a 22" house brand from Best Buy. I used the same method to put a 19" in the master bedroom, too.

When you removed the TV in the master. Does it slide out like the one in the main salon?

Connie G - The one in the master is much more time comsuming, but not hard. On my 1997, you have to remove the clothes rod and common wall from inside the port side locker/closet. It's about 7 screws. The orignal Panasonic TV base is screwed to a 1/4" piece that has the formica on the front. You have to get under the cabinet from inside the locker/closet and unscrew about 4 screws from there. I used a small yankee screwdriver. This is one that rachets back and forth. It will slide out from there. You have to then unscrew the TV and plastic base from the board.

Very cool mod. This project is on my list of things to do and your idea of recycling the base plate for the old TV is a good one. I think I may get a TV with a DVD built into the side of it instead of making a separate box for the DVD. Have you had any problems with the viewing angle since you cant adjust it? I would rather use a fixed mount like you have (for security in transit) but I am concerned about being able to see the TV without the ability to adjust it.

Lucky for me my boat did not come with the optional (in 95) TV in the master so I have a untouched wall to work with there.

Jon - I put a Toshiba 19" with a DVD player on an swivel arm last year and I was not happy with it. I felt that the unit was sticking out too far from the wall. Secondly, I could not get it secured as I wanted with the swivel arm.

I think viewing angle is dependent upon the acutal TV. I would go to the store and look at the screens from all angles. Even down on the floor. Boy, I got the look of "Dad, you are so embarrassing me" from my 18 year old. I watched a DVD last night while laying on the floor with my head by the fridge on a pillow. The picture was fine.

There will be few DVD player choices, if you go my way. This is because of the size limitations from the box below the TV. I found a Samsung unit that was shaped almost round and fit in there perfectly. I used velcro on the bottom to keep it from moving around.

I am very happy with the new TV and set up.

We removed the mirrored door from the hanging locker just above the V-Berth salon vanity on the Port side, crafted a new door, hung the new door using the original mirrored door hinges + latch and installed a 15" TV with a built-in DVD player. When we want to watch a movie,we simply open the door and hinge it towards the front of the boat. There is a 120 volt outlet right there, so we are good to go. Clean & simple.
