Another Stereo Upgrade

Running the Power & Ground.

Since the original spot used by SeaRay to run wires to the cabin power panel is now filled with Silicon Sealant, I had to find a new route. *** note to self, take pic and post ***

If you are in the Bilge looking at the portside, look up and underneath the sole, you will see daylight from the side vent, just forward and up from that you can see an opening which runs forwared along the portside behind the seating

Looking down into this area, you can see where the main power lines run from the Bilge...

... to the cabin

Its along this area that I will run the main power and ground lines to a distribution block. Depending on how I mount a sub in this area, I may put the Distribution block in side panel area. The available space behind the Cabin power panel is limited.

I did locate a great spot for the amps. I lose very little storage space and they are right there with the rest of the electronics

The second amp will go above this one, once I take out the shelf there.

To keep them cool, I plan on cutting vent holes in the backside of the cabinet so that it vents to the big open space there. So there will be several vent slots behind the amps. In addition, I will add standoffs so it each amp sits away from the back panel. Finally, I am going to cut a hole in the bottom face of the cabinet and mount a 12v fan. I have a couple of fans leftover from my last PC build. I just need to find the right decorative grill to keep it all clean looking

I did the same thing you are doing, but I used different brands, and used 2 subs though. I used a 2 channel low power amp for my cabin speakers, and added a transformer volume control in the speaker lines for the cabin. It works great, you can adjust the volume in the cabin to blaring or off, or anything in between, and outside the party continues!

DA, any more pics on the progress of your project? I'm taking delivery this thursday (hopefully!!) and I bet it won't be long before I start down this path.

yep, need to post them.

After spending a boat buck or 2 at WM, got the power and ground wires along with fuse block. Went back to Crutchfields and spent another couple of boat bucks for the remaining bits and pieces. Hopefully will be done this weekend.

For some reason Crutchfield sent me 2 12" subs for the discounted price of one...$69 No complaints, but really no place to put the second :)

chris41483,

Where did you get the transformer volume control at? I need to do the same and I haven't found one I like yet. Thanks!!!

Interested in selling it??

No, but if you put your boat info in your sig and PM me an address, I will send it to ya ... no charge :)

Easy on Cincy, he will take delivery of his 07' 290 this Thursday. He needs time to take his own pictures and
personalize his sig.

DONE!!! Seriously, I can't thank you enough. If I can pay you something for it let me know. Or, I can return the favor with some free legal advice should you ever need some.

Don't pay him anything, Without "consideration" he has no legal ground to sue you.

:smt101 I am assuming humor intended here.

Sub is off in the mail today

All that darn good weather delayed the overall project though. Wife didnt miss the tunes last weekend but I sure did. WIth the upcoming crappy weekend, I should make good progress on the rest & with a bit of luck have it finished.

Thank you so much!! I can't wait to see the final result.

Well...If I might interject...thats how us 290 people are!:smt038

I have been doing (not me, a professional) my own upgrade.

I didn't have the premium system, so I have replaced the tiny amp with a Rockford Fosgate 500 watt amp. Replaced the speakers with MB Quart (4) and added up high in the arch 2 Rockford Fosgate speakers...Oh...and a Rockford Fosgate 10" sub.
I'm hearing it for the first time this weekend as long as the weather is good...Picures to follow.

I'd love to see pics of that! Where is the tiny stock amp? Details, details.

I heard the new system for the firt time Saturday...Wow...

The extra set of speakers high on the arch really brought the system to life. As I thought...the set on back of the cabin door and by captains leg have pretty much become less of an issue...they blend in well, and you can't really tell where the music is coming from.

After 2,000 they sound like 2,000...

I needed to revive this thread because I think a couple you guys, ahem, Groucho and DA, owe us some more pics!!

I've reached the point now that I have the stereo upgrade project firmly in my sights but can tell this is going to be more challenging than my bowrider system.

My thoughts are:

I love JL Audio 7.7" speakers so I'd like to see if 2 pairs of those will fit with a little modification in the cockpit.

I want the sub (JL 10") mounted under my helm seat facing rearward or do you think that will be too gawdy?

I suppose I could put it down by the cabin door but then it will have to be closed otherwise who knows how it will sound.

How did those amps fit in the cabinet DA?

Come on, show us pics of the final results.

Hey Cincy!

You are right, I need to finish up the post...

I have it all in and working, but went a little redneck on the sub.... I havent cut the hole yet, but wired up the enclosed Kicker and have it sitting on deck. When I grow a pair, I will cut the fiberglass and install the 12" sub :)

The amps fit perfectly into the cabinet and look nice. I still havent re-installed the door.

Its LOUD.... too loud for the wife and kid. Also I had to disconnect the cabin speakers. Once I wired the amps up with the pre-outs I found out that all 4 cockpit speakers in the original set up were wired to the "back" channels. When using the pre-outs and amps, one set became front and the other rear. That left the cabin speakers wired to the "front" channel with no way to cut the volume level or even off down below when Daddy revives the 80's up top :) Time to pull the cabinet out again, and wire in a Volume cutout for the front speakers.

All in all it has been a fun project, at times daunting and delayed, but well worth it in the end.
