Another Stereo Upgrade

I needed to revive this thread because I think a couple you guys, ahem, Groucho and DA, owe us some more pics!!

I've reached the point now that I have the stereo upgrade project firmly in my sights but can tell this is going to be more challenging than my bowrider system.

My thoughts are:

I love JL Audio 7.7" speakers so I'd like to see if 2 pairs of those will fit with a little modification in the cockpit.

I want the sub (JL 10") mounted under my helm seat facing rearward or do you think that will be too gawdy?

I suppose I could put it down by the cabin door but then it will have to be closed otherwise who knows how it will sound.

How did those amps fit in the cabinet DA?

Come on, show us pics of the final results.

Yes..your right...I do owe a few pic's but here are my excuses.
1) It's been raining
2)It's been raining
3) Actually the only thing visable that has changed is the sub on the port side bench..and the high arch speakers...(came out nice) but I see you have a grab bar there....I would not put it near the cabin door. When mine is cranking everything not nailed down vibrates.
4) It's been raining.

I do have a pic of the sub install and the high arch speakers...somewhere on my camera card...I'll look for it now. Wish me luck!

Here you go...I don't have any of the amp, but it is in the upper closet near the radio.

Looks good. I was sitting on my boat yesterday and thought I would add my sub the back side of the helm seat base. I need to measure to see if it will hold a 10 inch. I think I will stick with the 4 cockpit speaker locations for now but if I added 2 more I may put them further aft just above those steps for for getting on and off the boat from the sides. There should be plenty of space. But I think I will like having them hidden like they are stock.

Mounting my amps is going to be the biggest challenge.

You and I are almost doing the exact same upgrade. I am putting 2 pairs of JL Audio 7.7" speakers in the cockpit... a JL Audio 10" sub (under my cockpit galley) and a JL Audio M6600 (6 channel) AMP in the mid berth.

I don't remember reading what kind of AMP you are using... can you further describe your setup? I wish we lived closer, maybe we could have gotten a deal if we bought double of everything haha

Mine is;

4 MB Quart
2 Rockford Fosgate (seen on arch)
1 Rock-Fosgate Sub 10"
1 Rock-Fosgate 500 watt amp.

I left the stock amp to power the cabin speakers.

Keep in mind....wherever you mount the sub is going to vibrate like hell!

I gotta tell you...If you hide them under fabric like they are currently they DO block sound. The new ones sound much brighter...and they aren't better speakers.

Groucho... i was going w/ the JL Audio 7.7 speakers... how do you think they compare to the MB Quart? Also, I assume you prefer rockford amps over Kicker amps since that's what you went with... any reason why? I am so torn now... i don't know what to do :-/ Based on this writeup, i decied to go w/ the Kicker SKM10 sub since that would eliminate me cutting a hole in the fiberglass. I can put it easily under the cockpipt galley. Do you think it would be ok just sitting in there? Do you think i need to at least cut a vent hole to let the sound out?

Thanks guys.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post links to other sites but here's one that I did on my large bowrider that I had previously.

This was one helluva a system and I would probably do the exact same. However, I will probably research amps again to see what's new out there. I recall seeing some nice stuff from Alpine that was supposedly able to run much cooler and had a much smaller footprint.

Loved those JL speakers. I wonder if I put the speakers in the same location how it would look to remove the fabric and put the grills on the outside so they cover the hole and make and nice border? I'd probably only do that if I wasn't happy with the sound.

Groucho- when you removed those panels did they go back into place nicely? I haven't pulled mine off yet out of fear of breaking something.

I don't know how they compare...but my sound guy has become a freind..(he was related to a good friend of mine)..and he has been written up in a couple of trade mags, as well as winning awards all over NYS. I trust him and his judgement. I can say it sounds awesome...and cheap lasts forever,
YES...cut the hole.

I did not do my install...but my guy broke a couple of clips. Have a couple ready to use...The dealers normally don't have them in stock. You will need them.
