Anode panic

I have some fiberglass repair on my boat done recently getting it ready to put in. I am getting ready to replace the anodes (one hull block and two on the trim tabs) as that's all that was on the boat when I got it.

I painted the props shafts and rudders with petit prop coat (none having anodes on them). When the fiberglass guy/ boat mechanic saw the prop coat he said that will mess up the electrolysis on the boat and said take it off immediately.

Now I'm in a panic, do I need to remove it? Are the anodes I have enough? Should I add more? Etc etc......

I'm in freshwater if that matters.

Rzride - I'm not the expert - but...IMHO...those of us in salt water paint all of our running gear with Propspeed or Velox and do not use shaft anodes - Sea Ray says no need although some people use them - when I am in fresh water, I use Aluminum anodes just because I cannot find Magnesium (preferred for fresh water, but Aluminum will work). Zinc will not work in fresh water. So... replace your external anodes with Magnesium (preferred) or Aluminum and you are good to go.

I second what Carter said. No need for panic. Actually, my prop shafts have propcoat on them now from my recent trips in salt water. I also run Aluminum anodes in fresh water. No anodes on the prop shafts.

I'm aluminum as well, and aluminum will work in both fresh and salt. Zinc is solely for salt, magnesium solely for fresh (if you can find them).

I painted my running gear with Rust-Oleum cold galvanizing paint which is similar in zinc content to the petite stuff. I run with AL anodes on strainers, tabs, bowthruster and main hull and have had no problems. I ditched the shaft anodes as they are not recommended by Sea Ray and have heard horror stories about them when they wear and fall off.

Interesting about the strainers and bow thruster. Can you possibly provide pics or details on how to add these ?

Thanks!

These are south bay strainers. The have a mount on the front. The vetus bowthruster has one underneath the prop that can be replaced.

Internally the strainers should be properly bonded.

I will see if I can dig up pictures.

Running gear painted with a Rustoleum Cold Galvanizing Spray Paint, zinc anodes on tabs , hull and thruster. No anodes on shafts.
No problems after 3 saltwater seasons.

So I get the issue of potential damage when they wear and fall off but if they wear doesn't that mean they saved your shaft? This is what mine looked like after last season. I'll take my chances on the zinc falling off. In fact I'm doubling up this year.

This was discussed awhile ago and I deferred to the experts and have not had any problem since removing them. If mine were worn that bad I might worry too.

Interesting thread, thanks. I actually just had to replace several of my green bonding wires. Or I guess more accurately I had to reconnect them. That may have been my issue last year. I'm still going to leave them on this year since they are bought and paid for. I bang them on pretty good so not worried about them sliding. I'll see what they look like in October.
