I'm looking to add 100-200' of chain to my existing rig. Does anyone have a good source where to get it at reasonable price? WM sells the one I need for about $5 p/f.

Thanks Bucit. $4.17 is better than $4.96, but it's still a bit hard to justify at this price.

Mine is Hot-Dip Galvanized High-Test Chain 5/16" G40.

Wow $3.25, that's much better. I hope they don't kill me with shipping cost...LOL

I'll give them a call to see what they can offer.

From the anchor locker on Four Suns...

Hmmm....that's true, he doesn't use it anyway. We'll leave him 10-15' to keep the anchor in place and look like it's all there. Rick, if you get it for me we can make a quick deal.

I'll second that one.
We did a purchase of 300ft of 8 plait spliced to chain through them and are extremely pleased.
Quick ship time, came in a bucket at an untouchable price even with shipping.

Good to hear. I'm going to be replacing mine with the 8 plait in a couple weeks as well. I got lucky after all my searches they seemed the most reasonable and then I noticed they were 20 minutes from me.

Alex last summer the DEP was going to ban the use of ancor chain in Bay and Tices so check it out before you have to remove it they had maps of where it wsw to be baned.

From what I heard there's no more Tices (cruising wise).

Just make sure it is compatible with your windlass.

I am running it in a Lewmar Pro-Fish 700 for 2 years now, anchoring every time out with no problems.

You're the man! I knew I could count on you. That's what friends are for.

Be very careful of buying steep discount anchor chain. Sometimes the vendor sources it from Chinese manufacturers and the distance between links is different that a chain windlass can handle.

Four friends at our marina decided to go to all chain rodes last summer rather than replacing worn out nylon lines. They pooled their needs and ordered 1200' of stainless G4, 5/15" chain from an industrial chain supplier. The OEM windlasses on 460DA's 420DB's and 370EC's would all take up about 4 feet before getting hung up because the chain had slightly longer links that regular US hot dipped galv. chain.

Thanks for heads up Frank. I'll ask the vendor to give me exact measurements of the link to make sure it's a 100% match before I commit.

It may be more efficient to just buy 10 feet and see how it works. The vendor may just send you the spec sheet that outlines the dimensions the chain is supposed to be. I once bought several 1/2" shackles, that were marked as 1/2", yet when I got them home discovered they actually measured 3/8".

How do you join two sections of chain so that goes thru the windless, or do you just throw away your shorter (30 ft) section?

thanks, Art

You can't join them with a mechanical link as there are none that will exactly match the link, and gypsy. I suppose you could join them with a piece of line with tapered splices that was long enough to go around the gypsy and allow the following piece to set itself in the indentations in the gypsy. That does sort of partially defeat the purpose of having chain as the line section will be weaker, and then you still have to deal with possible jams. If I were to convert to all chain, I'd just go with all new chain. But then between our mooring and floating docks I can always find a use for old chain.
