Lost my anchor when the rope cut, now needing to get a new anchor and I'm going to all chain.

On the Lofrans windless, it says "5/16". What I can't find is the link size, does anyone know that size?
Also, is there any particular chain type that is best? I'm seeing a lot of "bbb" and "G4"?

Had what I believe was a 35# anchor - plow type. Inland lake, mostly sand, mud, and broken down rock bottom, anchoring in 10 - 30' where wind is the biggest factor.

From what I've read, seems like a Rocna original looks to be the best. Would it hurt anything if I went to a heavier....44# anchor?

Regular chain that is sold by the big online retailers will not work on a lofrans windless what they are selling is american or inch numbers. Lofrans uses metric chain you need to go to Imtra corp for corect stuff the last time i looked 30 feet of chain and 200 feet of rope was 650.00 three times what american chain and rope go for.
 
That windless uses 5/16", G4. My boat is similar in size and weight to yours, and I have about 30' of chain. Works good in a lake environment.

Is the open/inside of the chain the same size, or do they vary? Is there an optimal size?

Is going up 9#'s for the anchor an issue?

Quite honestly, I don't even know what size my anchor was and I can't find anything in my literature that states its size.
 
Here is a useful website ( http://www.1st-chainsupply.com/aboutgrading.htm ). A few years ago, I converted to all chain in my old 2000 410DA. They had the best price at the time. I bought WINDLASS CHAIN, 5/16 G40 HG. It worked perfectly.

Pay attention to your WLL (Working Load Limit) when selecting shackles. Also, this page provides more detail on shackle selection ( http://www.1st-chainsupply.com/attachments/misc/shackles_alloy.htm )

I was lucky enough to find a dock mate that wanted to upgrade also, so we split a drum.
 
BTW, The 380DA & 410DA are similar so I figured that a heads up is appropriate. I did have one minor problem with the chain upgrade....

I had about 275' of chain. When retrieving the chain, it would not spread out in the anchor rode locker. It would pile vertically, right up to the bottom of the windlass. Then we would need to push the pile over to allow the windlass to continue retrieving.

Going to move forward with either a Rocna or Manson, 5/16's G40 chain, and I'm waiting for the folks on the shackle link to get back to me.

Make sure the new anchor lays down properly in the roller. When I bought a Delta for my 410DA, it stuck way up in the air so I had to return it. I bought a Kodiak which is what Sea Ray used new. Other than buying from a Sea Ray Dealer, there is only one place to buy one but their prices are great. The anchors are the only thing Southcoast sells to the public.

Full chain is the way to go. Adding some line at the end (for additional scope) can never hurt.

There quite a few new generation anchors out there. IF you prefer the roll-bar style, ROCNA is one of the leading brands. But, without a roll-bar I personally like ULTRA. As for the size, get the biggest you can (providing it fits the pullpit and looks proportional), trust me on this one.
 
I have a 2002 380 Sundancer and I lost my anchor last weekend. I’m looking for a new one and need to know the weight of the one that came originally. Was it 35 or 22 lbs. I’m on lake Lanier so it’s pretty tame. thanks for your help.

One thing to do when going all-chain, is to make sure you attach it to your boat with at least a short piece of line. That way, if you ever need to sacrifice your ground-tackle you will only need to cut through that piece of line. Otherwise you'll be using bolt-cutters or trying to wrench free a shackle while your anchor is at tension (almost impossible)

The cut-line should be long enough to reach from your locker hatch but not long enough to reach the windlass.

Thanks Chris. I called Southcoast marine and they asked for the part number of the Anchor.
Any idea about the part number or can you recommend a galvanized one?
I see the Delta type anchors but not sure of those are the right ones.
 
The sea ray part number is 878512, I think a delta works, I can look at mine this weekend and see if there is a name on it. I put a delta 35 lb on another smaller boat and it worked perfect.if you were closer I have a spare

I replaced with a Lewmar dtx 35 lb this year along with chain / 3 strand rope setup.

It does/would if I lived on big water. Shoot I could sink my boat in Lake St Clair and probably be able to still stand on my hardtop when it's on the bottom. ;)

Hah. Yeah no doubt. I've never anchored in deeper than 30-35ft of water myself. But not dealing with rope on the rode was a game changer for my vintage windlass. Your newer rig probably isn't as finicky as the older ones like mine.
