This happened today groups have tried to stop the use of these ducks on the streets since they relaxed the rules on where & what roads they can be used on, so far this summer they have been in several crashes & killed 1 bicyclist.

SEATTLE - Four people were killed and 51 were injured -- 15 critically -- when a "Ride the Ducks" amphibious vehicle plowed into the side of a BellAir tour bus full of international college students Thursday on the Aurora Bridge, officials said.

Sounds like the drivers are distracted big time from what I read.
Its pretty sad, could have been avoided.

9 years in the army..............those things are NOT designed to be used on public roads, they are a glorified/modified Personnel Carrier..............

these are used on road around here all the time and i have never heard of a duck boat crash. there has to be 100 in service in Boston and my home town Plymouth Ma.

some research showed 1 minor crash in Boston years ago when brakes failed.

I worked with those things years ago. They are not designed for amusement of the general public. And the operators I have seen in my area are not exactly skilled in the art.

The deaths in Philadelphia occurred because the engine quit and the operator, instead of calling TowBoat US (which is based in my marina, literally a few hundred yards from where this happened), anchored in the main shipping channel ostensibly to wait for another one of those things to give him a tow. Also, they had welded a steel cage over the passenger area to support a sun cover.

Big surprise. They got run over by a barge and people couldn't get out. Amazing only two were killed.

Having ridden the "Duck" boat on the tour thru Seattle and Lake Union with my family and crossed the bridge where the accident took place, the bridge is narrow and there is no center divider, so any drivers options in an emergency are limited. The recent update is the NTSB is examining the left front axle which sheered and was most likely the contributing factor to the accident.

Standby what I said, what we use in the military is NOT designed to be civilllian friendly.
