Amberjack Thread -

I have the mid birth area instead of the storage. I could put them there, but it would damage things there that need to look nice and clean. It may be a bit of a challenge, but I'm sure there's a good way to do it without damaging the cockpit and deck.

I don't know how many tanks you are talking about, but if you have the fish package you have to rod holders on each side. Have baskets built that will secure the tanks upright the height of the side, perhaps rubber feet on the bottom, have a lip that goes over the gunnel with 2 pieces of pipe that slide down the rod holder at the correct angles. for rough seas, secure and batten down with something attached to the rod holders tie downs. Or some type of holder/hook attached to the side down low, and tie it down. may need to fold the back seat down for a basket on the starboard side since the bait prep/ sink area takes up space.

another thought is get a flush mount holder (or two) intended for a table. mount that on the engine compartment lid. Have a tank holding basket made where table leg(s) stab into the flush mount holders and secure the holding basket. Or depending on the number of tanks and diameter of the tank. Connect 2 or 3 perhaps 4 fender holders (that are usually attached to the forward safety rail), to the table posts, stab into the flush mount holders and there are your secured, easy to access, extra tanks.

Hope this helps.

Just closed on a 2000 290 Amberjack with twin 454's. Anyone know where I can get a transom bench/cushion assembly ??? Mine was missing at purchase (Repo boat !!!)

Sweet! No idea on where to get one. I would just put a few of the white deck chairs on the back. I did that arrangement once and liked it. Actually it was more comfortable also.

Ourcastaway I just bought a repo amber jack [29' 2005 ] and it was missing to back seat and rugs. I called sea ray and they said no good so I called the PO and he had them, Sold them to me for $ 400.00 had to go to Ma [ and I am from NY ] to get the stuff.

Deck chairs a good ides, also post on other bulliten boards. Try the fishing ones, since the 290 aj is a fishing fool. Also it is simple enough to make, some marine plywood, piano hindge, folding legs. Then get a shop to cover it with matching material.

Another question - Does anyone use their AJ 270 for diving - and if so, how do you store your tanks?

I installed a tank rack just below the pad and just above the rod holder enclosure. (see pictures if they posted properly) Double Yellow 009.jpg

Then I had a guy fiberglass the fender washers and nuts in on the back side so I can unscrew the rack (without the nuts spinning) and remove it for fishing so no one is banging their knees.

Got most everything from SeaSucker.com
http://www.seasucker.com/ProductCart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=8 . Go to the Mounting Hardware page too.

I do find it difficult to get on plane though when I have four people aboard and 8 tanks back there with dive gear taking up a lot of the mid-deck storage. Usually have to have a couple people walk forward and stand until the bow drops. So although the mid-cabin storage is inconvenient getting the tanks in and out, keeping the tanks in there may be the best load balance way to do it.

I've got a question myself:

Does anyone have any good pictures of outriggers mounted to their tower and has anyone considered installing a wakeboard tow point up there?

My next project. I've opened the access areas to look at the tower attachment points to see if they're strong enough and having a fiberglass guy that does wakeboard work look at it too. Pictures attached of the two forward attachment points accessed through the interior cabin overhead. The aft points are accessed through the speakers. Any one considered welding a wakeboard spindle up there?

to help get on plane install a big hydrofoil. It helped mine plus bow rise is minimized, you stay on plane slower.

Bennett (AC3000) has a self adjusting rim tab control for less than $300. considering installing one my self. get it on plane lightly loaded, set it for proper attitude, let it do the work when heavy.

Thanks JPGSHOW for the photos. Have you or anyone else tried the suction holders for holding anything substantial, like tanks. I like the idea but I feel like I would have tanks bouncing around in the cockpit on a day with 3's and 4's. Also, Sanchita, I like the idea of the hydrofoil, but in the past I have been told that some manufacturer's warranties are voided if one is installed. I don't know if it is true or not, do you know anything about that?

don't know about warrantee issues, mine is out except for the horizon engine. if concerned use one with a no drill clamp. but in time you will lose it or so i have read

Have had a 1995 270 Sundancer for a few years - we like the size and cabin, but the cockpit is too cramped. Seems like the newer 270 Amberjack is just about perfect, although I wish it had at least 4-6" side decks - oh well, every boat is a compromise.

Couple Q's for ya'll:

1. My 270 DA has the same LWL, but weighs a 1000 lbs less and has a 19 degree deadrise. With a carbed 300 HP 7.4 BIII and 26P props, it has good power cruising at 3600 RPM even with 6 people and food and gear for a week. Seems hard to believe you guys can get out of the hole with the deeper V, more weight, and a souped-up small block that puts out about the same as my 7.4. All the 270 AJs I see on the market have a 5.7 or 6.2 Magnum and almost never see a 7.4 or 8.1.

Do those motors perform well enough with similar loads? What pitch props do you run?

2. Looking at pictures from brochures and boat listings, it appears that the mid-berth wasn't on the 2005-2006, but the 2007 and newer do. Can anyone give me some info on that?

3. I like the bait station, but not all the time. Some models had a seat behind the helm seat. Am I crazy to think about installing quick disconnects and hoist it out and put it back in when we are live bait fishing in the bay (only 4 months/year, but not every weekend)? We do 90% of our cooking on deck now, so we could use it as our outdoor galley, but just wondering if it really does take up a lot of cockpit space.

4. Any updates on Sanchita's wakeboard tower upgrade? I bet you could get a 4' wake at 2200 RPM!

5. 270 AJ's are pretty scarce on the left coast, anyone have any idea about the cost of shipping one to California (yeah it's a lot, but still cheaper than going to SoCal and ordering a new one from the last Sea Ray dealer in the state...

Appreciate the help!

I've got a 2007 Amberjack with the 6.2 MAG MPI and Bravo 3 leg. The boat with 4 people on board 3/4 tank of gas 1/2 tank water and waste can cruise at about 29 MPH at 4000 RPM and burn about 17-18 gph! Not bad for a boat this size with 1 engine!

I just bought a 2008 model new from the dealer. It has a midberth that is comfortable for me (5'10" - 185). This configuration fits my purposes well. I like the bait station. I would be a little concerned using the arch as a wakeboard tower until I could confirm with the manufacturer that it is designed to handle that type of force - it probably is, but I would hate to damage my fiberglass if it is not secured to handle that. I have only had it on the water twice since I bought it last month so not much experience. I took it out last weekend on flat seas and was getting between 1.5 to 2 mpg on plane. It cruised well at about 30 and wot about 39 mph with 1/2 tank of fuel and 2 people on board. I'm a rookie with this size and style of boat, so my trim maybe could have been improved.

Does your boat have a mid-berth? I've been hearing conflicting stories that the 2005-06 had an option of cockpit storage or mid-berth. Definitely appreciate the replies!

The mid berth option was started for the 2007 model year. All prior model years had the below deck storage option. So from 2007 to 2009 you got a mid berth weather you wanted or not. Sea Ray i guess pulled to plug on the 270 Amberjack for the 2010 model year. From what my dealer said Sea Ray is planning to revamp the boat with some changes and re-release the model in the future but that could be a bunch of B.S.

CW does your boat have bottom paint? What did you use to measure the speed (gps, or the speedo in the dash). I have the same set up as yours and on a flat calm day the fastest we hit with 2 people on board 1/2 tank of gas was 37 MPH burning 25 GPH.

No bottom paint.
Admittedly I was only looking at the speedometer, not the GPS. It could very well have been closer to 37. I wasn't really looking that closely at the numbers - I'm still just tryng to get comfortable with a new boat. I have a bit of task overload when I am operating this boat. I have a 22 ft bay boat that I'm used to, so I'm having to get comfortable all over again. Our numbers sound about the same.
I will say that I have no regrets about buying this boat. We are very pleased with the performance and quality.

Yeah I feel the same way about ours too. The build quality is great and the layout is good too. It has a good amount of power and being able to cruise at 30 MPH at about 2 mpg is good too. My only complaint is the forward V berth and how hard the padding is. It looks like we are going to try and sell ours in about a year because we want to move to something with 10.5 feet of beam that has more fuel and is capable of long hauls to the canyons offshore. So far we are like the 290 AJ but we are also interested in Pursuit 305 and the Wellcraft coastal 290.

If we were planning to go very far offshore I would want something with twins. We will mostly dive within 10 miles of the coast and take short trips on the ICW to the bays east and west of us. Who knows, if we find that we really like cruising we may move up one day also. The extra room on the 29AJ would be nice.
