My port alternator is only puting out 8 Volts, so I ordered a new one Amazon yesterday. I plan on replacing it on friday... I have replaced my water pumps serveral times so I know how remove the serpentine belt... This is what I plan to do... Please tell if I am doing someing wrong.

1. Remove and clean Batery Terminal connected to port engine.
2. Remove serpentine belt
3. Remove Alternator and leave on all connections
4. Attach new Alternator.
5. Move over electrical connections
6. Put Serpentine belt back on
7. Reconnect batery terminals.

Seems to me there are three bolts. I plan on leave one of bolts out until the belt is back on to give myself some more play with reinstalling the belt... Once it is on I will put the third bolt in...

BTW... I believe the alternator got sprayed with salt water when I blew a holes in four exhaust hoses (same hose). This was caused after I replaced the verilift muffler and slightly miss aligned the exhasut... It is all fixed now...

You are right on. I just replaced both of my alternators and it is easy. I didn’t leave out any bolts and didn’t have any issues. YMMV Good luck!

Do yourself a favor... Have the alternator bench tested before installing it. I've had them bad out of the box before.

Is YMMV mean Your Milage May Vary? Just curious....

Yes sir (more of a figure of speach). The reason I say that, you never know if there is some little difference between our engines. But really, it is a straight forward deal, you have it all right! BTW, Good advice from Newman.... I know the pain of that.

I would not have thought of bench testing it. What do I test for? Shorts? I can't see if it is putting out voltage if I don't install it...

Check for the output. It would be a shame to put it in and find out it is bad. I’m not saying it will be, but one of teh two i purchased (I also got mine on Amazon) was bad, so I sent it back and had a replacement in a couple days, just in time for the weekend! No issues since then.

I plan to check the output after I install it. Thanks. The alternator is coming from RareElectrical. I hope it is good...

NAPA can bench test them. They check the output and for shorts.

I replaced the alternator on Friday... Took less than 10 minutes, including readjusting the serpatine belt... I decided to replace the two batteries that that engine charges... Prior to begining my project, I took the new alternator to 4 auto parts stores... Only 2 had bench test capability, and they were both unsuccessful in testing it. The problem was they did not have the right pig tails to test a marine alternator. Fortunately the new alternator is working great, puting out 14 volts... Next year I probably just change the other side to be safe... Thanks for everyones advice...
