Mercury 496 HO with Bravo III Drive
Hi, We just acquired our first boat, 280 Sundancer. We had 2 successful trips out and got back to dock with no problems manouvering in. On our 3rd outing we were cruising back for 10 minutes at 3,800 rpm (single 496 HO) , slowed down to under 6 knots alarm sounded, all engine indicators were normal. Unfortunately in my haste to return to dock I hit the port stern into a concrete wall, (see pic). Wondering what kind of cost to repair ?

The reason for the alarm was low drive oil in reservoir. The leg was recently rebuilt and I read that air pockets can cause the oil level in the reservoir to drop after a refill, so hopefully that is all it is. I have refilled reservoir and alarms gone away for now...

I hate it when those alarms start driving the boat!!! :)

That damage doesn't look so terrible. How much it costs will depend a lot on where you're located I suspect.

Perhaps a good lesson in this one. Keep calm, make sure you're not sinking, then proceed :)

Yeah, a good glass man can fix that right up. Cost will vary... anywhere from $300 to $1,000. Is that a crack in the gel coat there on the left? That could also determine the cost.

Yes, it was so loud and shrill I just wanted to get back to dock asap and to add to the problems I had a cross wind pushing me onto the concrete wall and a faulty bow thruster. My previous 2 docking attempts had gone beautifully , but this attempt I was too heavy handed and that was the result.

Yes there is fibreglass matting visible , at least it is above waterline. The blower vent cover is cracked but I think they could repair that as I know they are rare as hens teeth.

The engine vent cover is out of production. What ever you do be very careful as finding a replacement may be impossible. The good news is that a good fiberglass guy may be able to repair it in place.
