Greetings,

Has anybody tried after market exhaust manifolds and risers? I have a 2005 340 with 8.1 and it looks like it's time to replace them. Just wondering about the possible options available.

All the best,

I installed Hi-TEK stainless steel manifolds from AU, last year... They are 300 lbs lighters than cast iron, last longer, and give you more HP... They are more money than OME... So far so good...

All the best,

I don't have a lot of experience, but I'm in the process of installing Osco ones on my boat now. The previous set was made by Barr. I've been told that Barr and Osco are both good. GLM cast iron parts are made in China and some people have reported problems with them. I wanted to go with aluminum, but they were not available and after some more research, it appears that there may be other issues with them such as more frequent maintenance because of the difference in expansion rates of the aluminum vs. cast iron.

I would go with OME. That is an item you can't play with. Look at www.pbsboatstore.com for good prices.

Those Hi-TEK rcknecht mentions are a great option if you are willing to pay for it. I heard they go for around $3000.

I've had very good results using Osco parts and the support from the company is excellent. Mark

I paid $4K for both engines last fall from Hi-Tek, including gaskets and shipping. I believe they are cheaper than OEM, the stainless riser replacements alone list for over $600.00 each.

My 340 is an '04 with 300+ hours. I had my engines done this past winter. Total cost $4200.00. I feel much better boating without fear of manifold failure and hydrolock.

I did mine over this winter with OEM parts, the parts for both motors was $1,500.

This is great info. I've note yet done anything with mine on my '05 340 with 410hrs. How do you determine when the time has come to replace the manifolds? I thought the primary issue was just replacing the gaskets at the top of the manifolds when they rust out? Am I missing something? Mine are starting to rust just a bit but from what I can see from the outside so far it does not look to bad.

Rcknecht- did you notice any improvements in fuel consumption with the performance manifolds? That could easily pay for itself quickly.....

When they look bad from the outside, it's too late! Age and type of water has the most affect on manifold/elbow life. They last longer in freshwater and shorter in saltwater. Typically, 5 years is the average expected life. They should be inspected every 5 years and replaced when the rust has removed more metal than is safe or if the metal is fractured and brittle. Once there is a path for water from the water jacket to reach the exhaust port, your engine can quickly become severely damaged from hydrolock.
