AED's how many of you carry one?

Is your vhf wired to your gps so u can send emergency distress call out with your location???

Kevin, Your description of this thread is pretty accurate. However, you have only been around here about a year. My jaded comments come from the fact that a group of the "usual suspects" generally pan above and beyond suggestions. Did you read my First aid post thread? It was a sincere attempt to remind folks to check their kit and evaluate the contents. Instead of a positive promotion of a well intended suggestion it was turned into a debate over the intricacies of what I chose to keep in my kit and if boating was even dangerous.

Happy and safe boating, MM
So you start out with a preemptive strike at the ‘usual suspects’? As what you call ‘a negative poster’ and ‘usual suspect’ I thought I should review my behavior in your ‘most favorite thread’. Here it is, every one of my posts and those that I responded to….negativity?

Valid point! I have three on a 24' boat. The extinguisher in the engine compartment is needed to buy some time for passengers to abandon, the other 2 are simply to satisfy the law!

I wonder if those other 2 could come in handy on fires that start elsewhere on the boat...
All this mention of first aid kits but no mention of training...

Do you know that a a medical first responder class (like the ones taught to police officers) is generally a 40 hours class that is taught in the evenings?

Training could make the difference between knowing what is truly an emergency and what could maybe just use a bandaid.

I have been fortunate in my 30 years of operating a boat that I have only had to use a few items out of my first aid kit. Although I am not a medic by profession anymore the times I did use them though challenged every bit of my medical training (certified as a medic for 19 years now...)
Best suggestion in the thread...get some basic training to go with that first aid kit.
I love to hear of other prepared boaters. I have things in my kit that are clearly above my pay grade but there are several doctors and nurses around that likely don't have the tools their skills can use. Hate to need it and not have it.

MM
You're carrying around things that even doctors probably don't have? What did you add now?

MM, you think your ‘most favorite thread’ was ruined, that the message did not get out, I disagree. Seriously, had you not started the thread there’d have been no discussion at all. What did everyone get out of the discussion?…who knows, sort like wondering how many ships a lighthouse has saved but I’d bet most everyone had this thought at least…does my kit included what I think I need. It was a good discussion on a good topic I thought.

While I appreciate the "lively" discussion, I do prefer for the forums that I participate in to be drama-free since I usually log on to de-stress from work. At any rate, I do agree that it's been a productive discussion and has made me stop and think about what type of safety and medical equipment we have on our new Sea Ray. For one thing, we finally have the storage capacity to keep a larger medical kit and other safety equipment, and for another - well we're getting older (I'm turning 50 - yikes!) and these are things that we need to consider when we are out in more remote areas.

As a new CSR member I'm looking forward to more lively discussions in the future and I hope that lively also means being respectful as well.

Sincerely,
Sandy

In reflection, I think you are on track with this post. Thanks Woody for sharing a different perspective on it.

I've been wanting a life raft but put it off. With the larger boat I got last season I finally have room for more stuff. I usually have grandkids with me but there were some trips I wouldn't take them when we were crossing the lake.
