I finally got to take a trip in open water...straight shot from Little Egg Inlet (20 miles north of Atlantic City) to tip of Long Island. 6.5 hours with 4.5 hours without sight of land as you travel to the end of LI. Traveled with a friend w a 48' boat that cruised at 30 knots - damn fishing boats. Had to get up earlier on travel days to get a head start.
Montauk was great weather, stayed at Montauk Yacht Club. We tried to eat at Surf Lodge but after a 2 hour wait, they said no dinner was in sight. Maybe its easier on weekdays.
Float plan is as follows.

Block was great...a little rough seas approaching but no fog. Anchored for the first night and then had reservations at the Boat Basin (individual slips - no raft ups). Dead Eye Dicks is closed, so no place to eat within easy walk. The big suprise was the Oar - great seafood tacos (in addition to world famous Mudslides). Met Dancing Dave at the BB and he was nervous that I needed more Racors on board...after I departed, he gave the other boat a spare Racor just in case (Thanks Dave).
Off to Oaks Bluff in MV for three days. We had bad weather for the days in port, but had bike and rode in the rain. Edgartown is great but have limited slips. Lots of old school technology in wood boat repair places. Beat the big O by a week, so missed the crowds.
Best place to fill up was across the bay at Falmouth (2.42/g for diesel) This was the only fill up for the return trip. Boat cruises about 11-12 hours on 250 +/- gallons with about 1/8 tank showing (tanks size is 330)
Off to Newport...but stopped in Cuttyhunk for some water skiing after three days of crummy weather in MV. No fog, so all good.
Newport dockage was at the Newport Harbor Marina and Hotel....great place in the center of town, w indoor pool. Talk about the boating scene. Huge boats everwhere...great restaurants, lots to do...but beach - don't bother. We pedaled to the beach but the smell was so bad, we could not stay. Guess the locals didn't object. Cliff walk was awesome as usual. 2 days in Newport and then off at 7am to Beach Haven. ...pea soup for the first 1/2 hour. Arrived at the Inlet at 3pm and was docked by 3:30pm. Great weather and seas on the return trip.

Need to start planning the next trip....this one totalled 23 engine hours. And everything ran great too. How far is the Bahamas again?
