AC/Heat Question

I don't have a Sea Ray but I do have the same Cruisair reverse cycle AC/Heat in my boat.

I put the boat back in the water the other day and all of my units work (2 out of the 3) except for my salon unit. Every time its turned on and clicks like its ready to start pumping water it will trip the breaker on my panel. What gives?

Some particulars on what I have done and about the boat.

-There is one seawater pump that feeds all 3 systems.
-Good water flow out of all outlets on the side of the hull.
-Made sure it wasn't the dock power for it, ran it on generator and different shore connections.
-Checked the breakers.

It seems like it has a short when it goes to click the compressor on, is there a fuse somewhere or something else to check.

The Salon unit which is giving me trouble is really the only one I use ever so it is important to me to get it resolved.

Thank you in advance for your efforts to try to help a Carver owner out (Former Sea Ray owner and FUTURE!)

I would swap out the trigger for the system that is tripping the breaker with a system that you know is working... There is a problem between the unit and the relay box that holds the triggers.

After you confirm that the trigger is the problem, order extras for the spares locker.....nothing makes a wife angrier than no AC in July while you are on trip.....

please explain triggers

I only have a single unit, and am in the process of restoring the whole boat, but notice almost the same thing. When I run the A/C on the genny it really drags it down when the click to start the compressor goes. It flips the main 120 breaker switch. I turned of all of the other switches on the breaker box except the outlets (hot water heater, galley pump etc) and it doesn't flip the main breaker.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, just didn't want to re-invent the wheel.

All water output is good, and the A/C blows freezing cold air when I get it going...

Thanks in advance
john

Gary,

I have a Stowaway SMXII system (as best as I can determine). As usual, documnetation is hard to find. Can you describe these "triggers", where they are located, etc. - when you have a chance?

If you have a single system driving a single pump, you don't have triggers... It's basically a relay system that turns on a single circuit (the pump) if any one of the AC systems asks for it in a multi-system set up. The individual relays in the black box are called triggers. Here is more info:

They do go bad... very common...

HI Carver,

Triggers have been well explained for you here. You may want to try to start the other AC units. If they come on line and kick on the pump, then try your main AC. If it runs normally after another system has kicke don the raw warer pump, then you can assum its the Main AC trigger.

Always carry spare triggers. I keep spares stapled to the inside of the access panel when the control box is mounted. I never want to scramble looking for a spare with a lot of gnashing of teeth going on in the back ground. These will typically install (R & R ) in 6 minutes or less.

If you need to get the main AC going and the issue is the trigger, and you do not want to run all the other AC units to run the main, swap a trigger out from one of the unused units until you get to a replacement/spare.

Answer to the Hijacker: As for start up demand dragging down the genny, it is what it is as long as your genny kicks up to handle the starting draw. The issue maybe in the generator as it takes a lot more amperage draw to start a mortor than to run it.

Thanks guys,

I did try to start the others and then run the main AC with no luck so I am assuming its the trigger.

I remembered something about that from a post here a while back but could not for the life of me remember what it was. I will try the trigger from my forward unit and see if it works. Assuming that I find the trigger lol.

I cured the exact same problem by replacing a starting capacitor a few years ago on my Brother's "Rotary-Aire" unit.

I should be clear that I am not saying for sure it is a trigger. Frankly, I've never had one go bad that blew the breaker... but it's a simple thing to check. There are other things that could be causing it but that's beyond my expertise... Robski will probably pipe in... He does AC for a living (and really messed up a restaurant in Annapolis ;-) You'll have to settle for his advice since wingless is gone.

I am going to try taking my forward trigger out and place it in my main salon unit and see if it works. I never really thought of it until I came on here. I am headed to the boat in 10 minutes to see if it works!

Thanks
