This is the second time I've thrown out this question. I have a 1987 340 DA. I got a lot of good feed back the first time and may go wtih the new digital ac control. My question is; has anyone moved the existing controls from inside the cabinet above the salon table to the front of the cabinet? Is there any technical reason the controls are in the cabinet in the first place. Thanks for any help. R

I have the same situation. I think it was just a bad idea to put the control in the cabinet. Then again, they are kinda ugly.

I would really like to convert to the digital control and mount that outside the cabinet. I have had that whole cabinet apart and I have not seen a reason why it could not be moved to outside.

I have, put a digital to the left of the radio. 1989 340 ran the wire through the cabinet then down the side to under the seat. I will get a picture tonight. Then post it for you. Easy job.

If your set up is the same as mine, there is a warm air supply grille just outside of this cabinet and the controls should probably not be located that close to this air stream. That being said, how do you get a good sample of the cabin temperature tucked away inside of a cabinet? When I do away with the 3 knobs & upgrade to the electronic control, I will probably relocate the new control down to the other end to the right of the AC/DC control panel.

what ac unit do you have ?Mine is a cruizeair and was thinking about changing the controller also, what controller will you use? My three knobber is already on the bulkhead in the dinett next to the electrical box,i think ill put a picture there to cover it up.

Thanks for the info. I just wasn't sure what was behind the control panel and was a little concerned about pulling it apart. For the digital control unit you are thinking about installing...check out www.firstmatescabin.com. bottom of the page...they may have what you're looking for. When I change mine out I will post pictures. Seeing pictures is always a big help to me.

My unit is also a cruizeair. I don't think I will mind the control knobs on the outside of the cabinet.....certainly more convienent. Thanks to another contributor on this site, Tobnpr, he led me to www.firstmatescabin.com. They have a unit for 150.00 that looks like it would work out fine. You might want to check it out...it's at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the info thats a cheap fixer upper compared to the rest of the winter list!

I have been looking at this one: http://www.dometic.com/enus/Americas/USA/Marine/Marine-Air/Controls/products/?productdataid=84474

NorCal,any idea what prices they get for those two?

Ya know....I looked once and I can't remember. I think the kit was about $400.

I haven't done it yet as I need to have the reversing valve in my AC unit replaced. The system gets cold but won't heat. This is all on this year's project list.

PO of my boat disconnected the three-knobber in the cedar locker in the forward stateroom and put a digital pad outside the locker. Seems to work fine.

which pad did the po use rondds

SMXir. It is mated to a new 7K BTU cruisair ac/heat unit. I do not have the wireless remote.

Well, last week end I pulled the three knob control panel out. I didn't disconnect anything, this was strickly exploratory. I don't see any reason why it can't be moved to the front of the cabinet. Unfortunatley, my seawater pump stopped working. I don't think it had anything to do with what I did, at least I'm hoping. Right around the same time, the marina electrical service tripped...probably because I was running the heat, making coffee and had a heater going in the cock pit. Does anyone with this vintage of boat know if the ac/heat unit (cruisair) have a secondary trip swith or inline fuse. I dont have a problem at the panel and both of the blowers on the cooling unit work. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Rich:huh:

The controller can be mounted anywhere. You could put it in the eng room if you want because the temp sensor is mounted in front of the evap coil. Look behind the intake air grill at the front of the unit you should see a copper probe/wire. That is the temp sensor.
