One point of advice in THE BOOK video that I sent Dave is when you are sitting in the water and the boat begins to pull you, the board is and should go under water. Some people naturally try and keep their feet up and think it will pop you up eventually like skis...What it suggest is as the boat begins to pull you (we usually take off pretty slowly till the person is up, nothing like a skier) you should bring the back of the board (bottom of the board where your heels are) to your butt. That will naturally get you up. It has worked for everyone that we have taken out...Good luck with it.

My grandson just called and announced he bought a wakeboard and of course he would like me to take him wakeboarding when it warms up. But, he has never wakeboarded or skied in his life. He was an avid skateboarder so maybe some of his skills might translate when he finally can get up on the wakeboard. But I wonder if we can do wakeboarding with my boat especially with a green wakeboarder. A 260DA will not pull a very strong hole shot and it throws a huge wake to boot unless you are going over 25 mph. With his lack of experience, I am beginning to think this might be an exercise in frustration for both of us. I told him to at least try to find someone who has wakeboarded before so we can take them along the fiirst few times we go out and get some tips along the way.

Any thoughts or comments on this situation from all you experienced folks would be appreciated.

After seeing a friend of mine do this, I think you can wakeboard behind just about anything!

I would love to try to wakeboard behind a 260 or 280 as I am sure the wake would be great. The main problem would be where to attach the rope as you need it up high for tricks so it doesn't pull you down--allows you to fly. Wonder if you could attach it to the arch without damaging anything? Your grandson should be fine, do a nice slow takeoff and the board should do the work for him. He needs to stay balanced and should not put all his weight on his back foot. Also, tell him to try to fall back if he starts to fall--faceplants are not much fun and will ruin his day very quickly. If you need another person to tag along let me know. Have fun.

Youve just described the perfect wakeboard boat!! Doesn't take much to get up on a wakeboard, some forward speed and that's about it. A huge wake and slower speeds will make the boarders drool! They add water ballast to ski boats to create the perfect wake. You've already got it!! Go as slow as you possibly can while staying on plane and you've got the perfect wake. Don't mine your gas mileage or what the wake is doing to anybody else, just go way out and have fun.

Getting up is a little tricky. Basically just strap your feet in, float on your back and yell hit it. Bend the knees and cross your fingers and after a few tries he'll be up. I tried it and got up on the third try and I was out of shape. It was pretty fun.

"don't worry what your wake does to anybody else"??!!:smt009

Since when is this good advice?

It was a tongue in cheek along with the gas mileage! I just can't spell "mind"! I've had boats go by so close the boarder could touch the bow pulpit on the boat while anchored at the very tip of a bay. I've had large cruisers do the same thing and none offered to pay for my spilled coffee! I know we are responsible for our own wakes, but I've NEVER seen anyone get nailed for it. Wakeboarders need and prefer a large wake, so hopefully they will all go a little farther out! It's great sport and a lot of fun, but contrary to some of the things we're taught as boaters.

In response to the original post... I successfully pulled wake boarders both seasoned and green from the back of my 280DA with a single 496MAG Bravo 3. For the green guys I used my 139 Universal Hyperlite board (very forgiving) with a short line (~30’) tied off on the tow eye and a bridle I used tied to the upper side cleats. The boat effortlessly pulled boarders up out of the water with far less than full throttle. We pulled skiers as well as a wake skater and wake surfers. Another great board for newbie’s is the Hyperlite Roam which is amazingly easy to get up on even with a weak boat. The 280 made a killer wake by extending the drive out a bit and using no tabs, let the butt sit deep in the trough pulling anywhere from 12 to 16 MPH for the inexperienced and 16 to 22MPH for the advanced. Good luck!

I always meant to buy a Skylon pylon which would seat in my aft table hole and multi-point attach to where ever I could. That would have been a heck of a ride. BTW, you can purchase those used on eBay for a song.

Let the boat do the work when getting up. There is some debate on this but you may want to invest in a helmet. Keep the tip of the board out of the water to try and avoid a face plant which can be painful and could cause injury. I have yet to meet a wakeboarder that has not face planted.

My debate will be whether I run some dork down or not who is wearing a helmet to wakeboard

Kids aside, that is.

I was an avid skateboarder back in my younger days; 14-19 or so. Now, at age 36 I bought a wakeboard. Never snowboarded (though I want to), or anything similiar since I was 19 or so. I watched some YouTube videos, read some quick info on how to do it, and....got up on my first try late last year. And I stayed up for over a minute before I lost my balance and fell! Everyone was impressed. :smt001 It's been explained here well how to get up...

I kept going and going again and again. One time I did fall forward. But as is a natural instinct, you'll put your hands out like I did which cushioned the fall and wasn't an issue. I was a bit worried about falling, but once I did, it was nothing. Now I've seen some videos where a faceplant happens in a microsecond so in that case, good luck; but when learning, and at the slower speeds, it's nothing to worry about.

I only went out that one day, and kept trying until once finished, I could barely get my legs to work enough to get up the ladder. But I ended up going outside the wake, and then fell trying to go back in. I had a great time and can't wait to try again here real soon. Even have a wetsuit now. :smt001

Your grandsons background experience will make this a piece of cake for him, no doubt.

What do you guys that have experiance with wake boarding think about helmets? Ever somehow thump your head on the board?

I suppose it could be an issue if you are doing tricks... I've only been 'boarding a couple of seasons and the problem is either the board 'slipping' out from under me so it flies forward and I butt plant or caught an edge and did the aformetioned faceplant. The speed I am going isn't very fast either.

I don't think thats possible with my body. If it did happen, it'd probably be because my back broke in half and I'd have a lot other things to worry about than a headache. :smt001

At 20mph, the water is pretty, well, watery. It doesn't really hurt. When I first went out, I thought it might be like concrete...thankfully not.

We had to do this in Canada because it was banned here.....

No helmets, but that may not have been a bad idea.

this thing is fun though. Yes it's me.

Search you tube "kite tube" or "tube kite" and you'll see why it was banned lol.

I would do it in a second, but there are many frail people in the world who do things they most likely shouldnt.

Was it actually banned? Everything I read about them, they were just removed from the market.

Thats what I meant I guess, sorry for the confusion. I cant find them for sale on the web at the outlets. FOund some on ebay, thats it.

The board shop I went to last week said he wont carry them anymore either.
