!997 330 Cockpit Freezer

My vessel actually came with a refrigerator in the cockpit. It looks like the standard ac/dc fridge I had on my 260. I dont know if the boat was mfg differently @ the time. What is your rough opening? I will be on my boat later this week completing the sliding door hardware replacement. I could measure my opening if you'd like. Todd

Thanks, I'll try to get measurements tommorrow.

Got measurements, looks like I can fit a 2.7 cubic foot. Do you have it connected to 120AC or 12DC, or both? I have a genny, and was thinking AC. Don't know if I want 2 refridgerators running off the batteries.

It sounds like you currently have a freezer that is plugged in. Did you have electrical draw concerns using this or did you never use it. I have a freezer, but never use it. I am going to replace with frig. Currently I am wrapped for winter, but I would be interested in hearing your results.

Thanks,

I have an AC/DC fridge. It is plugged in in the back and has a 12volt switch on the forward facing surface of the passenger seat platform. I always run it AC with my genny too if I am not docked but I guess it is nice to have the option should I need it......

Yes I have a freezer I rarely use, its strictly AC. I would use the fridge more. The one in the cabin is AC/DC. I just don't know if I would want two of them draining the batteries when away from the dock.

When you say a "freezer", do you mean an ice maker? If so, I have the cockpit icemaker too. But since I don't trust using ice made from water sitting in a water tank in the summer heat, I also don't see the benefit. Maybe if the water supply had a good bacterial filter? I was thinking about swapping the icemaker out for a small refrigerator too. If you find a good one that fits without a lot of mods, please let us know.

The fellow I bought my boat from bought a little portable ice maker that produces 30 lb per day. He gave it to me with the boat. The beauty is I get the two fridges, lots of beer & juice box storage plus I can make ice from bottled or Brita water!

Not an ice maker, i'ts a small freezer, you can fit two small bags of ice. I just don't see alot of use for it. Also fairly loud, and runs constantly when it's hot outside. There's a Norcold that would fit model #DC0051, but haven't heard alot of good things about them. I will look at Isotherm (I think thats the brand) and see if they have something. Will keep you posted.

If any of you guys have an Ice Maker that you are looking to sell, let me know.
My opening is 14" wide x 16 1/2" deep x 25 1/2" high.
Model that fits it is a Raritan Model 85 B

Thanks
Dan

Mine is the Ice Maker. I agree with the water issue. I know I can add tablets to make is safe, but the thought just doesn't work for me. I like the idea of a portable for ice making and then having two beer/juice box coolers.:smt038

I will look into the price come spring...add another on my "to do" list.

Side Note... I pulled the Ice Maker out this fall as the water line was leaking. Very easy to remove and install.

The ice maker problem is not a Sea Ray only problem. I have seen two options. One is to install a filter system just after the tank if you are concerned about all water, or just in front of the ice maker if you are not. homedepotlowes has them for about $140. Second is to remove the actual ice maker part of the ice maker and adjust the temp control to make it a second fridge/freezer. Much cheaper.

David. I like the idea of removing the icemaker part. I had not thought of that. Makes good sense provided that the cooling unit is still there separate from the ice maker part. That way I can keep the parts and restore to original when its time to sell.

Great idea, about just capping the water line and adjusting temp. I will have to see if I can adjust manually. I only saw an on/off switch, but I did not examine that closely. Thanks for the idea.

I converted my factory ice maker to a refrigerator. I took out the mold and module assembly inside the box and installed a adjustable medium temperature thermostat. Note: there is a non adjustable thermostat on the back of these ice machines, everything is cylced thru the module inside the box (i.e water solenoid valve, compressor, harvest cycle, ect.) Now the old ice maker is now a cockpit refrigerator........worked great.......however, the evaporator in these ice makers are inside the walls of the box, not hanging from the top of the box with a pan under them like in the refrigerators. So, condensation would form on the inside and then leak all over the cockpit floor. Finally got fed up with that and removed the ice maker and installed a Norcold DE051. Had to enlarge the opening about an 1 1/2" aall the way around. I get way more use out the cockpit fridge vs. the next to useless cockpit ice maker. The Norcold has worked flawlessly and is very quite, one of my best upgrades.............may get one of those little portable ice makers, just because.

Hope this helps

John

Bought a Norcold model 751. 2.7 cubic feet. Removed freezer, and had to cut fibergass/wood around opening to fit. Was'nt as big a job as I thought. 18.5 inch wide is max width you can fit (need about 3/4" on each side to screw frame into.) It has a plug like the freezer I removed. I will also install a DC switch so I can run it underway. Total job is about 2-2.5hrs.

Fridge list for $699 got it for $629 at defender sale.

Nice read up on this thread, I was always wanting a cockpit refrigerator even on my 280da, but never got around to doing that project. Thankfully our 320da has ac/dc units in cockpit and cabin. They are loaded full and always on, love how they switch from AC to DC automatically, they have never caused a battery issue for us. I have a good friend with a '97 330da I will have to pass on the info to about your job well done "dmartin155". Cheers !!

Thanks

Let your friend know I found a couple of wires behind the freezer wire tied to some other wires. I put a meter on them and was suprised to find 12 volts. Looked like they were put there by Sea Ray. I traced them back to the house battery.
All I had to do was put in a switch off to the side. I will get pics of finished job.
