Hello All,

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any knowledge of how the vents on the port and starboard side of the boat are supposed to be mounted? Mine are all mounted with the cups facing aft, so it doesn't seem any air flow is actually getting in through the vents, to cool the engine compartment. The ones on my boat were removed and replaced by the previous owner, and I'm not sure they were put back on correctly. I've tried looking at pics of other 360 aft cabins but no one really takes close ups of the vents.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
matt

Mine are mounted with the cup facing aft. This is the typical method b/c you don't want salt spray and/or seawater flowing down into the vent and the ducts.

Thanks Ron! I was asking mainly because it gets so bloody hot down there and from some of the pics of the 84's it looks like the starboard vents are cupped forward.

I have been told they should be flipped different directions in order to work properly.

I agree The idea is to have air moving through the engine compartment while underway.
In your case with only two, one should be facing forward, the other back.
Our 270 has (4) one forward and one back on each side.
If ventilation is not good enough you could always add two more.

If the 360 is configured like my 390, then starboard vents face forward. If you remove the vents and look inside, one side has no 'floor' or bottom of the compartment to speak of. The other side will have a bottom with 4" holes. Attached to these holes (below deck) are the flexible ducting connected to your blower motors.
The idea is that whether or not the blowers are operating while underway, enough fresh air should be induced to clear any dangerous fumes and the forward facing vents work to achieve this.

Are you operating your blowers while underway? I dont know if doing so would be enough to appreciate any temperature difference, but it cant hurt.

Thanks All....I have 6 total vents, three on port (the side with the blowers and they face aft), and three on the starboard side also facing aft. I noticed on some pics of 84 360's that some of the starboard side vents appeared to be cupped forward, which seems it would allow to catch air while under way. I'll guess I'll get out the dingy take the starboard vents off and see what is behind there, I do have power vents on that side that blow air from the galley out, so I may just be flipping one or two of the vents.
Toe, I just recently started running the blowers to try and remove some of the heat, while at anchor. A few weeks back I was at anchor with no engines running, just the genny, and I heard her start chugging(the genny) like she was over loaded and then shut off. I checked the engine compartment and it was hot as blazes (and the genny was definitely not overloaded). I let her cool and then started her back up later and ran the blowers and I didn't have the over heating issue anymore that day. Thanks for the info. on the vents facing forward on the starboard side...I'll keep you posted as to my cooling of the engine compartment.

As a rule, if any of the three engines are running, then so are the blowers. I just cannot think up a good reason to not have them running. Providing fresh ar for combustion, compartment cooling and evacuation of fuel vapour is far more important to me than worrying about accumulating hours on the blower motors.
