A friend text me Southbound on the ICW this morning. He pulls into Opsrey Marina to see a lot of official people running around. Apparently, a couple guys woke up to water lapping at their bunks !! They were taking a "SANDY" boat to Fl. They had a couple of 250 hp Yamaha's rigged up " on the stern and some bottom repairs from Sandy...
Oil boom is around it now as it sits on the bottom.....Tim

Updated pics..

There is a thread on the hull truth .com. about this boat.

Stupid question....what happens in a situation like this, who foots the bill for cleanup and recovery of the boat?

I'm guessing, but I would assume that the Marina's insurance will play a roll to some extent, loss of revenue etc. But after the EPA and attorneys are through, who knows.....
Apparently a Kadey-Krogen pulled out from a slip adjacent to the fuel dock as the Viking was about to roll over onto it. Note the quick fix strap attached to the Port tower mount to keep it from rolling over.

I've spent the night at that exact fuel dock spot before. The owners there couldn't be nicer people. They brought fresh cooked breakfast to me in the AM ( Not at my request :). I hope they get this resolved with as little pain as possible !

I have never been asked for proof of insurance at any marina in Canada or US. I just assumbed that every one has it. Scarey for the marina owner.

Insurance isn't mandatory. That being said, proof of insurance is required at our marina. No insurance = no slip.

Ours is the same way, but this boat was just docking for the weekend. It makes me question wether or not mine sakes for proof of insurance when a boater does a layover.

Also I always figured if you had a loan on your boat you must have insurance

Those are my favorite sport fishers (Viking). It is a good reminder of what people went through during, and after Sandy.

Seems as if this will amount to just another delay for the owner, as from what I read the boat had already set for a awhile underwater. add a float, pump the water out, fix leak and head south.

You left out one very important fix.... The outboard motors..... Now think of everything that goes along with traveling and sleeping/living on the boat- mattresses, sheets, pillows, refrigerator, stove, etc, etc, etc. It's a very unfortunate setback for sure and I don't think its that easy to just lift her and continue......

Well I read the owner paid $100K and has his own marina. Already has the cabling in place for the out boards, pump out, overhaul the outboards, throw out old water logged stuff, run boat during the day down the ICW sleep on the bridge. If you have put $100K in so far, then possibly another $10K is probably doable. What is his alternative, I doubt he had insurance, so is he just going to walk away from the boat in South Carolina?

I really do not care one way or the other, I just made the previous comment based on the current expenditures. Supposedly the boat set sunk for a few months, so new engines, generator, electronic are already an issue.

Who knows maybe he will just say the hell with it and write all off as a lost?

This brings up a good point. The boat was under water for quite a while. He probably couldn't get insurance for it even if he wanted to. It is sad that she sunk again as it is a sweet boat. I hope that he sticks it out as it is already a great story to read through. I wouldn't want to be the one writing the checks but its not bad being a spectator. I wish him the best of luck because to shell out 6 figures on a boat like that you have to be committed from the beginning.

Well if he owns a marina and bought the boat under the bussiness his buisseness liability insurance shoould cover this particular loss, but i bet his deductible is a bi#$% and his rates will go up a tad.

That is not your brother's Bayliner..........

The Viking interior is usually solid hardwoods or teak with perfect finish. Whoever tries to bring that one back is going to have $100K in just the interior walls, doors and cabinetry. That restoration project isn't for the faint of heart or for someone not serious about doing the job correctly.
