Has anyone ever replaced the 6 changer CD player in the power panel with a DVD player? Since we never use it and it's a 2-DIN opening, I was considering replacing it with a car-type blue ray DVD player with an HDMI out. That would feed a flat panel TV that I plan on installing once this damn weather breaks.

Thoughts appreciated!

my first thought is that may be a lot of effort to pull the HDMI wire from the DVD player and the TV....plus it could require a very long HDMI cable depending on where you mount the TV...i have a DVD player mounted about 1 ft from the TV which makes for a very easy installation....

I assume you're going to mount the TV to the bulkhead so the run wouldn't be long at all. I have the factory installed TV and two other DVD players on board, but also have the 6 disc changer that i would like to replace with something. I'm just not sure what. Curious to the see what ideas folks come up with.

Cliff the 6 changer is about maybe (going off memory) an 8' HDMI cable pull to the bulkhead mounted TV. I do not plan on running an HDMI cable to the stock mounted small tv up by the v-berth. I'm trying to keep things clean, hidden and leverage existing supports or openings in the power panel. My pain will be re-routing the coax to get to the TV. The DVD player that I'm looking at for cars also has a very small wired IR extension/pick up about the size of half a golf ball that can be mounted to the top or bottom of the TV with double sided tape.

I was looking for a 12 VDC auto Bluray player to install where my disc changer is but found slim pickings out there. If you come across one I'd be interested in it too!

I've been looking for ideas to replace the CD changer as well. The DVD player is interesting. I'll have to see if I can run a cable to the salon TV. I've also thought of networking in a HDS 8 chartplotter there. We've never really overnighted on the hook and I'd use it as a peace of mind drift alarm.

I might venture up to the boat tomorrow. When I do I'll take pictures of the player opening if/when I can get it out of the panel. I'll also take pictures of the coax pulls, etc for the TV install and post over in a different thread.

I removed the changer yesterday. the opening is 2.5" tall by 9" wide in case anyone is considering doing something with the opening. The changer was supported by two metal L-brackets that screwed to the side of the changer. The HDMI Cable should be a very simple run to the back of the TV.

To keep things consistent I'm going to post the TV install pictures in a new thread. I took a ton of pictures that outlines the cable pulls and the panels that needed to be removed to do the pulls. I got about a third of the coax pulled before my feet went numb from the cold.

I previously had one head unit for all the speakers, inside and out. I removed my changer. Reused the mounting brackets to mount a second head unit in the opening. Moved some wires around and now I have an inside speaker head unit and an outside speaker head unit/amp. Cut a little faceplate for it and called it done.

I like that. What did you use to create the faceplate?

Just a piece of plastic I had lying around. The head units are behind a cabinet door so I just wanted to cover the larger cutout. I wasn't too concerned about perfect looks.

I have a question for you dale, what brand is the 6 disk changer and what are you going to do with it?

It's a clarion model DCZ625. I haven't decided totally what I'm going to do with it yet. Ultimately maybe nothing if I can get a finished looking install in the space that it came from. If I cant I might reinstall it and relocate the new DVD player somewhere else.

Here's my picture. Old XMD1 original to the boat is on the top. Alpine unit is installed below in the space where the CD changer was. Alpine is connected to 7 outdoor speakers via two amps. XMD1 is connected to the four indoor speakers via direct wiring from the XMD1 to the speakers. One day I will replace the XMD1 (probably when it stops working).

What was the trick to removing the changer?

There are two metal brackets that support it. There's two screws per side. Access to them is tight with a small wrench but you can get your arm up in there and back them out. There's not a lot of room to work. Thankfully the screws are really short. I left the brackets in place in case I can reuse them. I haven't quite started imagineering how the new player is going to go back in yet. A guy at work has a 3d printer and will be making a filler for me to account for the size differences of the smaller player.
