My 6.5 Onan is giving me fits. It will start but dies after a few seconds. I have checked the fuel pump, points, and plugs. If I hold start button in it will stay running. I am wondering if it could be the carb. I removed it and thought that I had cleaned it enough.

If you don't mind me asking, did you ever figure out what was wrong with it? I'm having the same issue with my 8kw which only has 60 hours. Runs for 20-30 seconds and dies.....

water pump impeller?? By-pass your oil and temperature sensors to see if it will stay running.

Yep still wont' run. I am wondering if it might be the carb....... perhaps I got bad fuel.

BTW, the fuel pump is new --- I replaced it. Impeller is new as well as new fuel filter too. I have a carb on order..... I'm hoping that is the issue.

When you hold the start button on, it automatically by-passes all of your sensors. If it keeps running, it cannot be your carburetor. It sure sounds like it is one or more of your sensors. If you do not know how to test each sensor individually, you need to manually by-pass all of your sensors and then remove the by-pass one at a time until the genny quits to find exactly where the problem lies.

Onan is a great generator when they are running but they can be very tempermental. Like electricaldoctor said I bet it's a sensor and my bet it is the one on your exhaust. It is a high temp shutoff switch. Mine was corroded and lost the ground to the elbow so the generator shutdown like it was hot. If you jump the two terminals and the generator keeps running that's it. If not, try the same procedure at the oil pressure switch and whatever else you have. If it runs at all, it's not the carb.

+1 on the last two responses regarding safety switches - my only additional comment is that I think a relay or two may be involved in the start and run circuits, so if the two or three safety switches check ok, but it still dies when you left off the start button, it could still be an electrical issue. smokstak.com has manuals with wiring schematics.
