New poster here! I bought a 2016 Sea Ray 270SD with 160 hours on it a few months back and have had it out several times since. I've noticed that it planes quick and pulls great all the way to 4500 rpms... and that's it. At WOT it will pin at 4500 @ 40mph. Everything about the boat is perfect except I should be able to reach 5000-5400 rpms. Bravo 3 with 22.5 props. I don't believe it is a prop issue with how quick and effortlessly it gets to 4500. May be nothing but if there is an issue I want to correct it. Any ideas on where to start? Thanks in advance!

Hi there, welcome to club sea ray.. Just to start out with plus to confirm, when you are up and running on plane, are you raising (trimming) the stern drive up a few degrees to the positive side at any time say before or after you have reached 4500 RPM? as trimming up helps obtain more overall performance everything else working normally.

Fine tuning the trimming will get me a slight bump in speed but rpms will not budge past 4500 unfortunately. Is there a chance the DTS is not calibrated correctly and not allowing for WOT? This is my first boat with all the digital controls.

Does your DTS have auto-trim? If so have you tried enabling that and used the different profiles?

This is my first year with a DTS boat and I'm loving it. But unlike a regular cable setup for throttles and shifting -- where you could put it in throttle only mode with the engine off, push the lever all the way forward and verify on the other end that the throttle body is all the way open -- I'm not sure how you can verify that with DTS.

Not that I'd want to try it, but if you could get max RPM in neutral (no load), but you can't get past 4500 RPM underway, it could be something else like needs a tune up, timing adjustment, fuel pressure, growth on the bottom etc.

Did you check out Capt Steve's test? It looks like your same spec:

Get yourself a Rinda tech mate pro scan tool. A little pricey but in the long run you’ll be able to verify a lot of engine data. Scan for any codes and then run it with the tool to verify the RPMs.

Check the props. They should be stamped with a pitch number. Verify they are stock. Original owner could have changed for some reason.

Check the weight of the boat if you can. Make sure it’s no overweight.

Those are the easy things before you dig into any possible engine issues. Good luck.

My last boat had twin 8.1 merc's and every few years between winter storage and spring launch it would lose 200-400 wot rpm which at first, like you caused great concern. How can that happen? A wise fellow boater suggested that I replace all 16 plugs before thinking anything major is wrong. He was right! Even though the boat started, idled, and ran fine it just couldn't get to the normal wot.

Although your engines are low hours, the plugs might be original. Some engines eat plugs more than others. The 8.1's are known for that but I'm not that familiar with the 6.2. My old plugs looked just fine when removed, but replacing with new solved the issue immediately.

According to the tec sheet. I should get 5000-5500 rpm's out of my 350 mpi 5.7 mercruiser and get 40 mph. The best I can get is 4300-4500 on a good day and 32 mph. I just had a new long block put in. same 5.7 and all I get is the same numbers. I think it has a lot to do with the way the drive is geared.
