58 Sedan Bridge Official Thread

@carterchapman I was thinking more replacement rather than repair. Boning does replacement systems.
I'd be interested in looking at the engine's data stream from a SAE J1939 perspective. It would be a boon for these older systems if the data is J1939 protocol compliant which I suspect it is.
If that is the case we can easily convert the data to NMEA 2000 and display it in any form desired.

Chris, I’m considering going with Corinthian carpet do you have any photos of your project and specifically where the template came up short and did you do the steps. Thank you

Cruising just now, pics when get home toward the end of the week. -C

I'm going to look at that when I upgrade all my displays. Right now, my radar (which works perfectly) and my AIS are analog, so I still need my E120. My e127 is digital.

Carter attached is a screenshot from an email I received from the boning rep after a lengthy conversation I had with him at the palm beach boat show last year with regards to replacing the current MAN display options with their current prices. I ended up having mine repaired by Lauderdale compass which did a horrible job and they don’t stand by their work, I wouldn’t recommend using them. I regret not replacing them with a newer color system directly from boning. I hope this helps.

boning reps phone number he provided great information and can answer all questions about NMEA 2k compatibility.

Your AIS can hook up to the new displays. We have the analog AIS, and it works perfectly on the Axiom Pros. We needed radar, auto pilot, and GPS antenna. The cameras, AIS, Sounder and VHF all hooked up.

PS, We did not need new displays on our MANs, Seatronics replaced the batteries.

My displays are both foggy and unreadable, so I think its the LCDs, so its $2K apiece to repair them - includes new batteries...

I've got to figure out how to hook up the AIS to my e127. When the PO removed the original Sea Ray Navigator and installed the e127, he made a MESS out of the wiring under the helm.

Did you get your boat back yet? How's the house and dock repair going?

I really don’t think they have touched the boat. I have not nagged them because of the dock. It appears they are starting the dock on or around the 18th. Once they start, I will start nagging diversified to get the boat done.

I guess you can just update the displays to the Axiom's.

Except for my analog radar - once I go to Axioms, I'll need to switch to a digital radar as well.

My analog radar does well for me and I understand how to work it, so I don't need a lot of the automatic functions of a digital radar, so I've just decided to upgrade it when it fails.

Sorry to hear DYS hasn't started, but I understand. Sounds like you'll get her back around October when we are back in Ft. Myers...

Hi everyone, I am considering purchasing a 58SB this coming winter and had a few questions for this amazing group before I pull the trigger

1) bridge clearance down the main branch of the Chicago river is a key criteria for me. I don’t mind modifying/removing and installing a flip down mast. Has anyone been through Chicago river with a 58 either doing the loop or locally? I need to be able to clear Michigan avenue which charts say is 18.7’ or 18’8.4”. I know the stats say the hardtop is 18’3ish inches. I don’t have room for error and I would be in serious trouble with the admiral if buy one based on a drawing and it won’t work…any first hand knowledge is appreciated.

2) why is it called “db” for shorthand sometimes?

3) what is visibility like in heavy rain without glass and wiper?

Hey Dan!

welcome to our thread. Hope you will become a permanent member! As to your questions:
1. I’m not so sure you can get her down to 18 feet by removing the radar and the TV dish along with the fold down running light. Certainly you would want to be full of fuel, that lowers you about 4 inches, maybe you would want to put some water in the bilge, I don’t like the thought of that myself. I’m just not sure you can make it I’m sorry to say. Others will chime in.

2. seDan Bridge

3. Not good. We try to not run in the rain.

I think it’s a shame, that the state of Illinois, or the railroad, won’t put that bridge back into operation.

We thought about using the 58DB for the loop so we did look close at this. I am pretty sure itwould fit based on the measurements as Carter mentioned full of fuel, but that's with everything removed including the radar and probably horns as well. Doing that once is one thing, but once or twice annually or more would not be fun. If this was the route we decided to do I planned on doing real life measurements at different load levels to be absolutely sure what needed to be removed. It's hard to tell exactly what they are calling the waterline but fuel and "stuff" aboard will raise and lower the waterline by at least 4".

The good news is, access to the radar bolts is excellent as is access to the hardtop so if you do need to remove it temporarily it's a fairly easy job. That said radars are surprisingly heavy!

Good luck, the 58DB is an awesome boat.

A few years ago, the Sub Zero freezer died - easy $2K service call fix.

Susan just noticed that while the two drawer Sub Zero refrigerator is cold, has lights on, but has no digits on the temp gauge (blank display). Breaker cycled and is ON, Compressor is not running. Looks like a service call.

Sub Zero 700 BR3

Ouch! For some reason our display does not always work, but it continues to cool. If I cycle the breaker, the display will come back on.

Ken

Our 700 BR display had been frozen at 36° for the last two years... beeps when drawers open too long... otherwise, no ON/OFF control, temp control, or alarm control at the unit. Still cooling just fine, separate fridge thermometer says 36° too. When the S-Z tech came to fix the freezer last year, he suggested using the fridge as is until it dies or stops cooling or whatever...

So a couple weeks ago, the 36° went away too. Still cooling, which is a good thing.

I think we're closer to calling the tech back, though.
