496 8.1 Elbows leaking. Saved motor!! READ

Here's what I would do. I would go have a machine shop fabricate you two spacers that are 2" tall and then sandwich another gasket in there. Since the joint is dry, there's nothing to worry about. I bet you could get someone to turn those around in a couple of days. Problem solved. Then go sell them to all the others on this board who are struggling with the same issue. You'll get a free set of risers and spacers out of it.

It's an Idea, but I already shipped the old ones back. I don't plan on going anywhere in the next month or so anyway. I have a bunch of other stuff to do on the boat too. Lets just hope May 9th is the correct backorder date. I'll call next week and ask them to call merc and see if the date changed. When the new ones are installed, I'm going to pressure test the rest and if there good I'll sell them to make up some cash.

Guys, I found a couple on Ebay that I was going to use, but decided to wait for the ones I ordered. These look to be NEW and never used. When I bought them they were listed that way too. I pressure tested and there perfect. If anyone needs them in a pinch I'm selling them for $300 plus shipping each. I'm going to list them in the for sale section. They do have some blemishes and scuffs on them. There the Merc 2 inch rise 865332A02 ones. There on backorder and nobody has them.

I received my 4 new elbows on Wednesday. They just showed up without any notification to my marina.

Rumor has it they are back in stock at mercury for those that need them!

I think they started shipping. PartsVu said they were coming in last Friday and will ship to me Tomorrow. We'll see.

Hope you get them soon.

While I was waiting for them I checked compression. ZERO on a cylinder on each engine.

It was being caused by stuck exhaust valve, same cylinder that would get the most water from the leaking elbows. I got it cleaned up and unstuck without having to pull the heads. Compressions are 170-180 on all cylinders now. So happy!!!

Hi, I have historically found porosity in the Mercury parts that I had used. We had to discontinue the product offering due to the number of defective Mercury Jack cylinders.

I highly recommend this to all of our customers. If the component part is metal, Bond it! You wouldn't believe all the problems that suddenly go away. The water rushing through your elbow creates a static charge that must be dealt with or it will start etching any metal you have. Brass is a metal too. Good luck, Frank

Any part that is bolted to the block is bonded
Very good point and 99.9% correct so long as the bolts make a zero resistant contact with the part. If the part is Anodized for instant or has a gasket of any type, electrical current will not pass through the Anodizing so you have to scratch it or bite into it to make the current path. Thanks for the great reply.
