480 DB Owners Club

OH!, This is going to be a good thread. Glad you started it instead of me. I feel it's posted in the correct place being it's directly related to the 480 layout. Our boat was a repo, so EVERYTHING not bolted down somehow disappeared. Only thing left is the RL80, Depth, auto-pilot and one of the VHF's. There was an C-120, smart talk box and something else ray-marine related (bracket still there with wires from C-120) Not to mention all audio and Video electronics gone. (Oh they left the original Clarion FM stereo) I'm not complaining because the price we paid also reflected these items missing.
I am working my way from the bottom to the top of our boat. Right now I am in the Engine room and lazarette. Next stop the salon for TV and Audio. Then to the fly-bridge. I'll work my way to the staterooms next year.

The Ray-marine C-120 was mounted directly in front of the steering wheel on it's mounting bracket. Not the best looking setup but I think had excellent viewing and functionality. They had moved what ever was behind it in that long rectangular panel, below the CAT EMS, to another location. I did see a picture of someone who rearranged the whole dash assembly .Re-fiberglassed it and flush mounted I believe an E-120 Pretty much in the same spot where my 120 use to be. I think the boat in question is for sale on Yacht-world.

I wasn't planning on replacing my RL80 also. Overlay would be nice, but not budgeted for it now. Since most of the Ray-marine stuff is gone or outdated, I am considering going to a differnt manufacturer. Possibly Garmin. Also looking into Noblectec with a smaller backup system. But having a hard enough time mounting a 12" screen, where would I mount a monitor?

Looking at installing a charger/inverter utilizing the two deep cycle 24V thruster bank. Has anyone done this? Want to be able to extend on the hook time without constant generator running. Most important is night time and frigerator and freezer. Would also be nice to watch TV in salon without the genset noise. Anyone done an inverter on the 480? Dave

Dave, We are going to do the same thing over the winter, however not planning to use the thruster batteries. I think i'm going to go with a dedicated pair instead. BTW we are only about couple of miles up the river from you in chester..

This is also on my list, however my RL80C does do overlay now.. It has the latest code i guess. I also have a Garmin on board now too.

Have you selected your inverter? Do you know where you will put the new batteries? Thinking of doing the same and hoping to consider all options.

I see you up in the cove sometimes. You were out in Block, as well, in old harbor...right? Thought about going that route as well, but leaning towards the thruster bank. Hardly ever use the thruster and the batteries are just sitting there. One down side is the engines do not charge that bank. You could add a 24V alternator to the one engine to charge, but not gaining much vs the cost of a 150amp Bamar charger. Still in the planning stages, but that is my thought. Probably install the unit under the port stateroom bed. Easy access through the bulkhead to the batteries. Then need to find a way to run wires up to the panel in the salon. This is my biggest worry. Anyone know how to get up to the panel from down in the staterooms. Quick look does not look easy. Would welcome any suggestions.

I'm currently set on using the Xantrex 3012 freedom.. it has auto generator start too. plus dual in and dual out for 120 circuits.. Thinking of putting sealed gel batteries in front of the grey water shower catch in the hallway to the bedrooms.. That part still working out though..

Yep we are in the cove all the time, and it was us out at block as well. I had thought under the port side bed as well, but then it did seem rather hard to get the wiring back... I'm still thinking thru that too. Im looking at charger/inverters as an all in one. Xantrex 3012 or 3024 would work for you. 3024 is a 24v charger/inverter. Dont see the need to have two separate devices..

My RL80C also overlays

I don't know what I was thinking. All that's left is the old Radar R4lxx. I guess the RL rang a bell, just the wrong one. I currently have no chart-plotting capabilities onboard. (Except for my phone, screen is a bit small for my eyes) :smt119

I just stumbled across this awesome article about a helm retrofit. It looks pretty involved. The helm and boat are exactly what I currently have; 2002 480 Sedan Bridge with 3196s. I'd love to get this sort of thing done to mine, but it looks very extensive (and expensive). It's a great read for all of us contemplating an upgrade.

Enjoy!!

I was looking for that article. Thanks. Wow!! wouldn't of guessed that high of a cost. That actual boat is currently for sale on Yacht-World in Grasonville MD.

Very cool mod. I am currently having my overhead electronics box re-done. I am having two bigger 'pods' one on each end of the box. It will be symmetrical with room for the wider plotters on each end, with smaller displays in the center.
