480 DB Owners Club

You can't idle a 480 DB in a no wake zone with both engines in gear or you'll get screamed at. Period. You have to take one engine out of gear and run at the spec 650 RPMs and you'll still be cooking at 5-6 knots. The props have a very large bite (because the engines have a butt load of torque).

2,325 ft-lbs of torque? Holy crap that is a butt load. Is the idle speed 650 or 600? I thought mine was 600 but now I don't remember. Looking at some other specs:

Exhaust Gas Flow: 1709 CFM
Exhaust Temp: 1050' F

Geez, my stove exhaust fan is 1500 CFM and I thought that was a lot.

OK When all you DB owners dock, how do you communicate with your docksman/woman on the bow? I ask this because while we were in St Ignace, I saw a couple on a 56DB with Headsets for Docking and embarking... so they don't have to scream at eachother through the ensinglas. Do you use Headsets? Or sceam and hope for the best...

Every now and then I use the hailer which also has a listen function, but mostly just hand signals. The wife is pretty good at knowing what to do now, so I just give her a thumbs up when I'm ready.

Although I am thinking about some sort of headset deal, it might be nice for those times when we do need to communicate.

Why do I want to talk to people on the bow? They stupid or something and can't figure out how to tie a line?

Actually... I usually just unzip the side curtains so I can yell at them.

I would like the wireless things but the headsets are huge and look goofy if you ask me. Why can't they make just a single small earbud thing... like a cell phone ear piece... No... it has to look like something you would wear hanging out on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

actually I've found some Ear Bud head set's and the ones we seen on the couple in St Ignace had a very small pair on Only 1 ear piece and a Mic... I know you have to also have a two way radio on your belt. I'm online now looking for small head set's because I don't want to look like I'm at the races at Nascar...

When I come in to my slip to dock, the Admiral is at the stern providing info on distance to the dock. I can see the starboard stern pretty well through the open hatch (I guess it would be the same for the port side on a 480 or maybe its not needed as the helm is even further abaft) although I can't see the midship side without leaving the helm. In order to hear her, Jackie would need to yell...which I hate because it makes a perfect landing seem like a disaster. So I went and got the Eartec units last winter. They are great! Work very well. The headsets are small and light and communication is clear. I'd recommend to anyone considering.

Thanks paul I'll look them up for sure, Now does anyone have trolling vlaves on their babies. I've talked with many and I'm going to need these installed, one ONE engine i believe to get it down to 2mph maybe 3 mph...Although fishing has become a great past time for me, I can do without it in order to enjoy the finer things in life with my Wofe abaord this boat/Yacht.

We have the eartech, and they work great... My only suggestion is to secure the unit securley to the person, my wife has lost it overboard... when it was just lightly clipped to her.

Robert,

I'm thinking that if you choose to use 2-way radio units (like motorola or cobra) to communicate between the bridge and salon, then the same radios could be used to assist with docking or line handling.

I will admit we get made fun of for looking like we are in a dance video (with the headsets) the small ones really don't look that bad... but you have got to have the 2 way full duplex, it makes the communication effortless. BUT it makes my wife happy and feel confident in what she is doing to be able to talk with me the whole time, no yelling shouting or otherwise....

We have the FRS radios to communicate between the bridge and the salon, but I don't think they would work as well as the Eartec unit for docking, etc. The hands free is a big piece, and the full duplex is the other.

Another item on my wishlist is some sort of intercom between the bridge and the salon. The FRS radios work, but barely.

Has anyone on their 48 sedan Bridge, changed the helm seating at all, Talking about the captains chairs, My wife Loves our Dual bench seating in the 320, but I see separate chairs on the big boys boats.... What's up with that, You can't even snuggle on a long trip with the lil woman..

Even better, you set the auto pilot and then take advantage of the great seating area just forward of the helm ;)

I was thinking the same thing, we have a remote for the autopilot, so I just sit around the table with everyone else.

Oh My God your killin my you guys...I would Love Auto pilot, don't have that in the 320....but most 480's have them... keep talking and all of you will held liable for my actions.. of buying one of these boats. And Greg , you with your remote on the auto pilot Come on....Your killin me.

She is still in LOVE with our 320, but I'm ready to move up.....She thinks its arrogant to spend this kind iof money on a boat...Yet she's seen higher priced boats out there....How did you guys get your wives to just fall in LOVE with these 48 monsters...??
