480 DB Owners Club

Does the Smartcraft fuel logic ever need to be programmed... ie the span, etc?

Doug

Doug

I'm hoping it does. My Port tank reading only changes in smartcraft when it's above 35 gallons in a 175 gallon tank....just when I need the info the most. Fortunately my analog dash guage is pretty accurate. I also find that my smartcraft calculates a higher fuel burn than my actuals.

Brian,

I think you've done collaboration, but may be this is what Robert needs to try. But, again it all depends if he's got the solid fact that he uses that much fuel, then SC issue is out of the window.

BTW, apologies to the 480 Owners. It seams like we're taking over their thread for a different topic. Robert, why don't we move this to 320 thread?

Guys
There are specs on these engines published somewhere and for Big BLocks, at 3200rpm, the spec is something like 16GPH each. That's when loaded properly. FrankC has those numbers. The smaller engines should be the same or better at that RPM. Either smart craft is wrong or or something else is amiss.

When I cruise at 3350, I burn 30gph as measured by floscan and confirmed by the "top off" method. No way a 320 is up over 50gph at cruise.

Here's what I got:

Ok Well I may have a chance to study this , this spring, But I'm thinking I'm dead on, Took a two hour ride at cruising speed and burnt 100 gallons...Seems about right, but I'll let you guys know when I can get in the boat and drive it....Yeah know.

I cruised my 320 over 100 miles in 7 hours or so and took in about 165 gallons. 95% of the time was at 20knots or so. You have some sort of issue going on there Chief!

I'm just a bit curious .....can some of you guys clue me in on what all chatter about 320 fuel economy has to do with 480DB owner's club topic?

I know its winter, but how hard is it to start a new topic so the search function has a prayer of working.

Frank, I tried on couple of occasions to steer it where it belongs. But, we keep getting replies here on the subject and I was just trying to help.

I have watched my fuel numbers fairly close for 6 years. At 600 RPM 2.2 GPH and 7.7mph. Cruising mpg is fairly linear at .67 mpg from 1500-2000 RPM burning 45 gph and 31.5 mph at 2000 RPM.. After 2000 RPM the efficiency decreases. My bottom is spotless as boat is kept on a lift so this might be a bit better than average.

Does anyone have the brand and part# for the aftermarket airfilters for the qsm 11's. Also, my diesel mechanic is going to try the rydlyme technique for the heat exchangers for the 1st time on my boat-what seems to be the best method and routing. I pulled the exchangers 3 years ago but would like to try the alternate method.

The walker part is:

I used Scale Break SS on my engines last summer and was very pleased with the results. It is supposed to be safer for the stainless parts, like the stainless pipes.

I disconnected the hose coming out of the trans cooler, that is where I ran the output of the circulation pump. I then disconnected the hose coming out of the sea strainer, I ran this to the collection bucket, with a mesh bag over the end of the hose to catch any big stuff that came out. It was a bag made for straining paint, got it at a paint store. Although I guess a pair of pantyhose would work too.

I let the pump run for four hours on each engine. I used 5 gallons of Scale Break per engine.

I also removed the impellers and zincs. I unscrewed the zinc from the brass plugs from last years zincs, so now I have a set of 'empty zincs' for when I flush.

If you need more detailed info just ask.

I can't believe this thread Died..... what the HELL, lets talk about boats and big 48's guys..

I just want to talk about taking the 48 back out on the water, I am so done with all of the snow...

But how is your search going?

Thanks Greg. I got a quote of 575 for each walker air sep from a dealer in south Florida. Does that price sound about right or do you know of a better source?

Greg my search is going well, I've talked with the bank, thy're onboard with me, and me and the wife have had a few discussions, and well she is coming around slowly.. We are going to look at one in heated storage this weekend, that aut to be good for HER... if she can see it then she'll fall in love with it then yeah know...But We won't do anything until we can take a Ride on one of these babies..
This is without a doubt a very large and intense decision, it's a lot of money...

$575 sounds like a great price, I haven't ordered them yet, but the price I got so far was $745 each.

When it comes time to replace the element that was $117.50. I was told the elements last 3-4 cleanings, and should be cleaned every 250 hours or every year.

Do you mind sharing the source? Those were on my shopping list this year.

I'm not sure what your budget is or where you have looked, but here's an '02 480 in my neighborhood. Looks great on the internet...and the internet doesn't lie.

Hey Greg you mentioned that you used scale break to clean your heat exchangers. I was looking at their website. Do you also have the Descaling removal system? What does that system cost?

Earlier in this thread a discussion developed concerning "coms" between the bow and the bridge. On our previous boat a 37 ft sailboat the admiral and I had developed a set of hand signals. One day while watching friends come up along side to pickup a mooring I noticed that they just had blue tooth headsets for their phones.

Didn't get a chance to try it out this past season but plan on trying it this year. In this day and age seems like everyone has a cellphone why not use it?

Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the folks this summer at MYC.

I certainly like the look of the black canvas, although the yacht we looked at today doesn't have that feature, he has all tan and is completely redoing the bridge eisenglass as we speak, the boat was awesome, and the Wife Loved it and is onboard except for the price....Now to get a good price on one around here...
