480 DB Owners Club

When I replaced my carpet I first tried to get the same carpet that was in the boat. I called SeaRay and got the information for the carpet. But when I contacted the manufacturer it was obsolete. I went to a local carpet/flooring store and found a few that very closely resembled the original carpet. However after looking at a few options we decided that we liked the feel of a cut pile carpet better.

I don't recall the brand or color, but it is very light, almost white. It is just regular residential type carpet, not marine grade or anything. I reused the original padding since it looked to be a pretty high quality rubber padding and it was still in great shape. I also had them add an additional layer of padding, In addition to how nice it feels, I figured it would also help with soundproofing a little.

The edges of the carpet are not bound, but most of the edges are covered in some way. Along the sliding door, there is a stainless trim piece that covers the edge. All along the cabinetry there is that carpet base 'molding' that gets glued into place. Under the sofa the carpet goes back far enough that you don't see it. Along the wood floor it is stapled and tucked into the transition strip.

The one little spot that doesn't get covered is the corner of the dinette seat. But between the great job the installers did, and the forgiving nature of cut pile carpet, it looks great.

It is also not glued down to the floor, the padding is glued to the back of the carpet. I didn't want to glue it down, because I have already had to remove the floor panels twice for after cooler maintenance on the starboard engine.

We do intend to do the rest of the boat. Maybe next year. It is not real obvious that it doesn't match. The color is pretty close and we did the entire salon and dinette area (the strip between the two sections of wood floor, and under the one bench) So all of the carpet on that level is the same.

We have the runners in place down below, so you don't see much of the carpet anyway.

I am trying to figure out how to deal with the hatches in the floor down below. I need to leave them accessible, however I do not like the look of the hatches in the floor. Which is part of the reason we left the runners in place.

I wonder if there is some way to make entire sections of carpet removable so that the hatches are concealed underneath. Maybe held in place with Velcro or something?

We leave all of our runners down (even salon) so our hatches don't show either. With two young kids it's just safer but not as comfortable on the feet. Your carpet looks great so I'm debating on doing the salon now since the old carpet is up for the winter. I like the idea of glueing the padding to the new carpet since the original had padding built in.

Greg,
the boat looks great. I like the extension of hardwood flooring. In regards to the forward cabins and flooring, I have seen where carpeting was wrapped around the hatches in the floor and attached to the bottom, I'm just not sure how tight of a fit that would be??

Hi Everyone
I am new to this thead. I have an accepted offer on a 2001 48 DB with 1200 hours on 3196 Cat engines. I have heard a lot of controversy over these engines. I am getting a Cat technichean and a survey done. Does anyone have any advice on anything In particular I should be looking at.
Thanks in advance
Scott

Congrats and welcome to the club. See if you can get copies of the service records from Cat. The Tech should be able to get them, you are looking to see if the recall has been serviced or not. With the hours currently on your engines, you should be beyond the point of the engines having the cooler issues.

Hi Scurrie, you need to check the following. Aftercooler cores replaced and serviced at 1000hours. Exhaust sensor has newer brass version. Upgraded aftercooler condensate drain. When you get the oil samples back, make sure the NA (sodium) level does not exceede 10ppm. If it does, you have salt mixin with the oil and the owner needs to figure out where the intrusion is coming from. Once these are verified, Cat builds a good engine and is no better or worse than any other.

No plan, does the tinted glass reduce your visibility at night? I would be interested in your thoughts.

In reference to tinted navigation bridge glass, I know that vessels over 45m in length are not allowed polarized or tinted glass on their bridge. (CFR NAVREGS 22) Not sure about recreational vessels, BUT I wouldn't want to explain why I didn't see something at night and I had tinted glass. FWIW IMO.

In reference to Scurrie, I would check records that the 1000hr service had been done on those CATS. which includes after-cooler cleaning and pressure testing.

Great point. I just read article 22 and it references lights, but will continue to research as citations are not welcome. We don't cruise at night, much, but have the ability to roll all 4 sides up for additional visibility
if needed. We enjoy the reduced glare during the day and have the perception it assists the cooling of the bridge.

3196 Aftercoolers

Ensure you have the latest 216-5147 We just had ours replaced and Cat has a 30% discount on the parts, they do not need to install to get the discount. They had this program in 2014 and think it is valid this year.

No Plan, Did they have to take up the floors to perform the after coolers or were you able to remove from the engine room?
