480 DB Owners Club

I have an opportunity to pick up a Zodiac 340 Yachtline with a 40HP Yamaha later this year. I'm guessing fully loaded it's a 750 lb tender which is 3x my current tenders weight. Does anybody run one of these (11'2") or similar on a 480DB and how much of an effect should I expect to feel? My boat's dialed in perfectly now and hate to mess that up by throwing a bunch of weight on the stern.

Quality Time - I have that same tender on my ‘04 with 700 Hp MAN’s while I’ve only had the boat in the water for a month. I’ve not noticed any performance issues with or without the Yachtline. However the sea conditions were calmwith little wind.

Hey fellas. So, after selling our 44DA and moving to FL, it's about time we get back on a boat! We've been hunting 480DB and 560DBs. With two growing girls, we need the space since we'll be staying on her for days on end. We'd also like to bring along another couple to go to the Bahamas from time to time. All that said, I think the 480 will be fine for the most part - but the 3rd stateroom has me questioning this decision.

Has anyone converted the VIP stateroom from a single queen into 2 separate twins? Or, has anyone converted the 3rd stateroom bed into a single larger bed, so that the 2 spare rooms are more similar? The 560 has a good layout. We like the twin bunks and the VIP full bed - what we don't like is that they are a touch out of our budget.

Thanks in advance! Good to be back. :D

ImportMonkey, I haven't heard of anyone converting the VIP Queen into 2 separate twin beds or making the 3rd stateroom into a larger (queen size) bed. If it has been done, would be interested to learn about the 3rd stateroom conversion.

I had an issue this weekend. Hoping for info. We were out for a cruise and I had a strong electrical smell (burning or hot smell) while exiting the marina. The gauges were looking good as the engine temps were 190. I jumped down in the engine room and didn’t have any smoke, smells or odd sounds. We threw a hook all day and on the return trip the port engine heat alarm went off. I shut the engine down and cruised back on one engine.
Here are some observations:

the radio played but no sound
The port impeller is due for a change. Starboard was changed last week and the other impeller is on back order. The impellers are three years old.
The gauges worked until I shut down the engine.

I did not have time to inspect anything before heading home. Could I have two separate issues? I’m thinking maybe the amp burned up and impeller came apart at the same time. The radio played all day until the heat alarm went off. When I shut the engine down the radio went dead. Or is it something else like a control board burned up?

Might be two issues. That said, my port battery is also my house battery and the starboard is the battery for the helm electronics. Yours might be the opposite and hence the issue. But overheating is first impeller then dig deeper.

Been having issue with starboard ignition switch or something else. Port engine starts no issue. Starboard... i press switch to first position and check engine lights come on as normal. When I go to start position, nothing happens. Sometimes it does work on first try and other times I will press it twice or four or five times before it cranks. Anyone have this issue before. I did change out the starter and solenoid (Cummins starter- 3103304 and solenoid- 24117-01 BX) on starboard few years ago. Could simply be the switch? Also, how can I start from engine room, if I needed to? Could jump the solenoid? Thanks, Dave

What happens if you gang the two batteries together by holding down the "emergency start" switch?

It sounds to me like when my 8.1 motors needed the slave relay replaced.

It sounds like a solenoid issue (or as Cummins calls them, magnetic switch).

Maybe swap solenoids? Or jump the two small terminals and see if it turns over.

No change if hold down the "emergency start" switch. Want to know how to jump the terminals. I will try and post picture.

See photo of starter and attached solenoid. sorry upside down. How would you jump the solenoid? Thanks, Dave

Cod....Thanks. Assuming a hefty gauge wire and obviously only momentary until it lights?

In case you don't know that little solenoid actuates the starter solenoid not the starter proper....
So there isn't as much current as you would think. A jumper across the two large posts on the small solenoid will do the trick.

A piece of 10 gauge wire should do just fine.

Thanks ttmott and techmitch. I do have jumper cables on board, so attach one end to 4 and "touch and hold" on 1 while she cranks, then let go when she lights? Assuming will be a spark or two. Just want to be prepared if I need to do and what to expect. Thanks

Correct, First make sure your ignition switch is in the run position. When you go to make contact, do it with a good aggressive contact to minimize sparking but some sparking may occur. Immediately remove once she starts.

Jumper cables is like swatting a fly with a Buick but they will work.....
